Steve Bennett will begin his 12th season as an assistant for the Gonzaga University baseball team.

Since assuming the full-time pitching coach in the summer of 2008, Bennett has tutored four West Coast Conference Pitchers of the Year, including three straight from 2011 to 2013.

In 2011 Bennett coached Cody Martin who was the NCAA statistic champion for lowest ERA. Martin carried a 0.86 ERA with 12 saves and was drafted in the 25th round that summer by the Atlanta Braves. Martin was named an All-American that season and is one of four All-Americans with whom Bennett has worked.

The next year, Bennett tutored Marco Gonzales into WCC Pitcher of the Year. Gonzales tallied a 2.80 ERA with conference-high 96 strikeouts. Gonzales was eventually drafted 19th overall in the 2013 MLB draft and needed just one season to reach the big leagues. During the Cardinals’ postseason run in 2014, Gonzales made six appearances, winning two games while throwing three shutout innings in the NLDS against Los Angeles.

In 2013, Bennett helped Tyler Olson become the best pitcher in the WCC. Olson went 9-4 that season with a 2.48 ERA and 91 strikeouts, finishing among the conference’s best in numerous categories. Olson ended up getting drafted by the Mariners during the seventh round of the MLB draft that season and is currently with the Mariners’ Double-AA affiliate, Jackson.

Bennett has been a coach for both of Gonzaga’s WCC regular-season titles in 2013 and 2009. He has seen two of the lowest team ERA’s in program history as well. In 2012 the pitching staff had a 2.95 ERA and a 3.19 ERA in 2011.

Under his guidance, the Bulldogs have had 14 pitchers selected in the annual Major League Baseball draft, including seven since 2011. The two highest selections in Zag program history have occurred under Bennett; Marco Gonzales (first-round by St. Louis Cardinals) in 2013 and Clayton Mortensen (first-round by St. Louis Cardinals) in 2009.

A 2000 graduate of Gonzaga, Bennett was a 4-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs appearing in 54 games over his career. He earned WCC honorable mention as a freshman, was selected second-team All-WCC as a junior and was drafted by the New York Mets in the 28th round after his senior season. Bennett chose to return to the Bulldogs for his fifth year where he earned first-team All-WCC. He then went on to play four years in the Mets organization, reaching as high as the AA level.

The native of Helena, Mont., married the former Abby Cullen, an assistant volleyball coach for the Bulldogs in July, 2008. The Bennett's welcomed their first child, Cullen, in July of 2009 and had their second, William, Aug. of 2011.
