Ciera Min First Female To Win Big Island Amateur Golf Title
KOHALA COAST, Hawaii – Gonzaga University women’s golf incoming freshman Ciera Min did something Sunday that had not been done in the 90-year history of the Big Island Amateur when she became the inaugural female to win the event.
Playing from the men's championship tees, Min carded a 75 at Mauni Lani Resort for a 1-stroke victory over Clayton Amuro in her last tournament before she leaves for Gonzaga to launch her collegiate career.
A 2013 Waiakea graduate and a two-time Big Island Interscholastic Federation golf champion, Min finished with a 151 and had to overcome a 4-shot deficit at the Francis H. Ii Brown North Course. First-round leader Shon Katahira opened with a 72 on Saturday but struggled with an 82 in the final round and wound up fourth.
The top four finishers were all from Hilo. Amuro carded consecutive 76s and University of Hawaii at Hilo junior Dalen Yamauchi was another shot back at 153 after dropping into third with a 78.
Min was the only female in the 20-player field.
