Sunday, August 26 - Seattle University, 3 p.m.

  • The 2012 men's soccer season starts with a dogfight in Seattle as Gonzaga University travels to cross-state rival University of Washington Friday at 5 p.m. The teams met last season in Spokane in the season opener with the Huskies taking a 3-0 victory.
  • Friday's match will be televised on the Pac-12 Network. The Pac-12 Network can be seen on Comcast Cable in the Spokane market - Pac-12 Washington is on channel 430, Pac-12 Networks is on channel 431 and Pac-12 Washington HD is available on channel 628. The Pac-12 Network is not currently available on DirecTV or the Dish Network.
  • The University of Washington holds a commanding 22-1-1 edge in the all-time series against Gonzaga University. The lone win for the Bulldogs came in Spokane in 2007 when the Zags took a 2-1 victory. The deadlock came in the 1999 season, a 2-2 overtime affair. One of the most memorable matches in the series was in 1997 when Jeff McAllister's penalty shot in the waning seconds hit the crossbar/post and UW escaped with a 1-0 win in front of a Gonzaga crowd estimated at more than 1,000.
  • Gonzaga University returns its top scorer from a year ago in sophomore Clark Phillips. He led the Bulldogs in goals with 4, assists with 3 and total points with 11.
  • Gonzaga scored 16 goals a year ago, and players who scored 12 of those return this year. In addition to the aforementioned Clark Phillips above with 4, Nate Pacheco, Nick Hamer and Greg Carter scored two each, while Zach Hamer and Josh Phillips each had a solo tally.
  • Junior Ryan Caballero, who started 16 matches a year ago for Gonzaga University, is back in the nets this season. He had a 1.64 GAA in 2011. Caballero set a single-season saves record last season with 93, topping the co-record he set in 2010 with 91. Redshirt freshman Chris Lowrimore and redshirt sophomore Keane Ellis are also vying for time.
  • Gonzaga University men's soccer junior midfielder James Matern and sophomore forward Clark Phillips have been named to the 2012 preseason All-West Coast Conference team as voted by the conference head coaches. Phillips was named the WCC Freshman of the Year last season and Matern was named to the All-WCC second team. Other returning Bulldogs honored last season on the All-WCC team are second-teamers Nick Hamer and Josh Phillips, while Nate Pacheco joined Phillips on the All-Freshman squad.
  • Nine freshmen and a pair of transfers dot the Gonzaga University roster this season, and two of them are expected to be in the starting line-up. Freshman forward Conner Bevans from La Habra Heights, Calif., and sophomore transfer midfielder Lars Ludwigs from Woellstein, Germany, should get the starting nod.
  • Newcomer Luis Montealegre is the first generation of his family to be raised in the United States and the first player in Gonzaga University's NCAA Division I history to be of Guatemalan descent. He hails from Boulder, Colo., and attended Niwot High in nearby Longmont, Colo.
  • Gonzaga University dropped a 2-1 exhibition decision to Trinity Western University of Langley, British Columbia, last Saturday at Gonzaga. • Gonzaga University will be looking for its first season-opening win since 2006 when the Bulldogs travel to the University of Washington Friday. The Bulldogs downed UNLV 4-1 at home that season, but since that victory are 0-4-1 in season-openers. The tie came against Ohio State University in the 2009 Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic hosted by the Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio.
  • A relatively healthy Gonzaga University squad enters the 2012 campaign. Nick Hamer missed the final three matches of the 2011 campaign with a foot injury and Andrew Owenson is back this year after sitting out the final 10 matches with a broken foot. James Matern returned to action last season after missing 2010 following hip surgery. Keane Ellis, who redshirted as a freshman in 2010, missed last season after suffering a broken leg in a pickup game just days prior to the start of fall camp. He's back to full strength this year.
  • Gonzaga University will host Seattle University Sunday at 3 p.m. in its home debut. It will be the third straight year the teams have met, Gonzaga taking a 2-1 victory at Seattle in 2010 and a 3-0 home shutout last season. Seattle just recently re-joined the NCAA Division I ranks in 2009-10. The Gonzaga women kick off Sunday's doubleheader action at noon against Boise State University.
  • The Gonzaga Nike Classic will be held Aug. 31-Sept. 2 at Gonzaga Soccer Field.
