Zags Need Win Over Gaels To Keep Title Hopes Alive
SPOKANE, Wash. - Every game the rest of the season is like a playoff game for Gonzaga University as the Bulldogs make a late-season push to keep their streak of consecutive West Coast Conference regular-season titles intact.
The Bulldogs must take care of business Thursday when undefeated league-leader Saint Mary's College visits for an 8 p.m. game. The Gaels are 11-0 atop the WCC standings while the Bulldogs are second at 8-2, but have BYU and Loyola Marymount University breathing down their necks at 8-3. LMU visits Saturday. Even if the Zags run the table the rest of the way, they will still need help from someone else to beat SMC to move their streak of consecutive regular-season crowns to 12.
Gonzaga leads the all-time series with Saint Mary's College 53-26. The Bulldogs had a two-game win streak in the series snapped in the 83-62 loss earlier this year at Saint Mary's. SMC became just the second WCC team to win in the McCarthey Athletic Center with a 73-71 victory in the first meeting a year ago.
