Pangos Named WCC Player Of The Week For Third Time
SAN BRUNO, Calif. - For the third time this season, Gonzaga University freshman guard Kevin Pangos is the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for leading the Bulldogs to a pair of big victories last week.
In wins over league-leading Saint Mary's College and third-place Loyola Marymount University, the native of Newmarket, Ontario averaged 24.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 5.5 assists/game and had an assist/turnover ratio of 99.9 with 11 assists and no turnovers in 65 minutes of action.
For the week he went 16-for-18 from the field for 57.1 percent, 10-13 from 3-point range for 76.9 percent and 6-6 from the line. He scored 27 points against the Gaels in handing them their first WCC setback in 12 outings. He went 8-for-16 from the field, 5-6 from 3-point range and 6-6 from the line with four rebounds, two assists, two steals and no turnovers in 33 minutes.
He came back Saturday against LMU and scored 21 points, going 8-for-12 from the field including 5-for-7 from 3-point range, with three rebounds, a career-high nine assists, one steal and no turnovers in 32 minutes.
The two victories kept the Bulldogs in the thick of the WCC regular-season title chase as they pursue a 12th straight crown. The Bulldogs (10-2) trail league-leading Saint Mary's (12-1) by one game in the loss column and the win over LMU gave the Zags a two-game edge over the Lions (9-4) in the loss column. BYU lurks behind the Bulldogs in third place at 9-3.
Gonzaga is on the road this week, visiting Santa Clara University Thursday and the University of San Francisco Saturday. The Zags end the WCC regular season the following week hosting BYU at home Feb. 23 and traveling to the University of San Diego Feb. 25.
