Six Former Women's Rowers Conquer 2012 Ironman
COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho - This past Sunday six former Gonzaga University women's rowers came together in Coeur d'Alene to partake in the 2012 Ironman Triathlon. Katie Atkins (2006-09), Samantha Cekovic (2007-10), Courtney Haase (2000-03), Karen O'Hagen (2002-05), Julie Smetana (2005-08) and Alissa Stempson (2007-10) all successfully finished the grueling day that consisted of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile run.
Haase, who also was an assistant coach with the Bulldogs from 2006-2011, finished the course with the group's fastest time - 12:55.46. She finished the event in 944th overall and was 36th in her age division (Female; 30-34). Atkins was a little over a minute behind Hasse and closed out the course in 12:56.58. She finished 951st overall and was 18th in her age division (Female; 25-29).
"It was a great day and such an amazing group of athletes to be part of," explained Atkins after the event. "The new bike course and weather provided even more of a challenge despite the already tough day. The wonderful fans and supporters really made the day!"
Smetana had the third fastest time in the group of sixth; crossing the finish line in 13:47.34. Her time put her in 1,299th and 33rd in her division (Female; 25-29). Following Smetana was Cekovic in 14:12.07 for 1,460th and 40th in her division (Female; 25-29) and O'Hagen in 14:28.37 for 1,568th overall and 44th in her division (Female; 25-29).
Rounding out the group was Stempson with a time of 15:04.42. Stempson finished 1,765th overall but was sixth in her age division (Female; 18-24).
