Gonzales On Mound As USA Baseball Faces Cuba In Havana
HAVANA, Cuba - Gonzaga University junior-to-be Marco Gonzales is one of the final 22 players selected for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, and will get the start in Friday's (tonight's) game against Cuba in the second game of a five-game set at Latin American Stadium.
USA opened the series with a 4-3 victory Thursday. Following the Cuba series the squad will head to Haarlem, The Netherlands, July 14-22 for Honkbal-Haarlem Week. Honkbal is Dutch for baseball. In addition to Team USA, Cuba, Japan, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico and Chinese Taipei will also participate in the tournament.
The 2012 version of Team USA is currently 5-0 following Thursday's victory with wins over the Fayetteville Swampdogs, Wilmington Sharks and Morehead City Marlins of the Coastal Plain League and the Catawba Stars of the Virginia Collegiate League.
Gonzales is hitting .429 through five games, going 6-for-14 with a double and three RBI. On the mound he pitched 1.1 innings of relief with three strikeouts to get the victory in a 6-1 win over the Marlins in his only appearance.
University of Tennessee coach Dave Serrano will serve as the manager of Team USA and will be assisted by George Horton (Oregon), Jason Gill (Loyola Marymount) and Andy Stankiewicz (Grand Canyon).
