Bulldogs Volleyball Earns AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Gonzaga University was one of two West Coast Conference schools and one of 102 NCAA Division I programs to earn the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2011-12 season.
The award, created in 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team GPA on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
"Consistent with the Gonzaga University and Athletic Department Mission Statements, one of our core values as a program is to maintain high academic achievement while graduating student-athletes," head coach Dave Gantt said. "In an environment with high expectations, both academically and athletically, we need excellent leadership. In my opinion, Mike Roden , Assistant AD, Athletic Support Services, has taken the 'academic management' of our program to a new level. His understanding of the GU system, foresight, communication and organizational skills are exemplary."
Last year's team finished the year with a cumulative 3.4 GPA. Together, the Bulldogs posted a 3.43 GPA in the fall and a 3.37 GPA in the spring.
"Many programs represent themselves as high academic achievers, but of the over 300 Division I programs, less than a third perform at the necessary level for this award," Gantt said. "Our student-athletes and our academic staff should be proud of their consistent achievement. Being successful students is part of our culture, and it speaks very highly of the 'Zag Experience' that we represent the WCC on the annual list of AVCA Academic Award winners."
"Many coaches tell us they take more pride in and hear more positive feedback about winning the AVCA Team Academic Award than anything else they do all year," AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer said.
The other WCC named to the list was the University of San Francisco.
The Bulldogs begin preseason practices on Tuesday, Aug. 7. They open the season playing in the Northwest Challenge hosted by the University of Washington Friday, Aug. 24 and 25. The Zags will play Portland State, University of Washington and Boise State.
