Thorarinsson To Greet 14 Newcomers For Fall Soccer Camp

            SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University head men's soccer coach Einar Thorarinsson has announced the addition of 14 players when fall camp begins Aug. 8.

            "This is a talented class," Thorarinsson said. "I look for several players to provide immediate minutes this season."

            Also reporting for camp will be 16 returning letterwinners and a redshirt freshman.

            "We have a solid nucleus returning, but the younger players will challenge the veterans for playing time," Thorarinsson said.

            Joining the Bulldogs this season will be Kieran Abbots, Conner Bevans, Todd "Dustin" Ferger, Jesus Gonzalez, Zach Hudson, Aiden Huggins, Ari Pall Isberg, Nikolai "Nik" Littleton, Lars Ludwigs, Luis Montealegre, Amos Nash, Andrew "Andy" Newman, Corey Taisey and Parker Victor.

Kieran Abbots
Midfielder Otis Orchards, Wash. Gonzaga Prep

Kieran Abbotts was a 4-year starter for Coach Matt Kinder at Spokane's Gonzaga Prep and also played club ball for three year for Coach Tim Seely and the River City Steelers. A 5-11, 165-pound defensive center mid, he scored three goals and added 11 assists in his Greater Spokane League career. As a senior he was a GSL honorable mention selection. He captained the Bullpups as a junior until he was sidelined with a foot injury, then was named team captain as a senior. The Steelers were the 2009-10 U18 and 2010-11 U19 Washington State champions. The 2010 club went to the Washington State Cup Finals. He captained the Steelers this past season. He carries a 3.41 high school GPA.

Conner Bevans
Forward La Habra Heights, Calif. Servite
Conner Bevans, a native of La Habra Heights, Calif., played soccer for Servite High in Anaheim, Calif., earning two varsity letters for Coach Mike Lussier. The forward set a school mark for single-season points as a senior with 69, scoring 27 goals and adding 14 assists to lead Servite to the Trinity League title. He was named the Orange County Player of the Year, the Trinity League MVP, Servite MVP, All-CIF Division I first team for the Southern Section, first team All-Orange County and first team All-Trinity League. He was also a kicker for the football team for one season, Servite winning the Trinity League title as he averaged 6.6 points/game. He has a 3.6 GPA and was named to the Principal’s Honor Roll.

Todd Ferger
Midfielder Spokane Valley, Wash. East Valley

Todd “Dustin” Ferger is another local product, graduating from East Valley High where the 5-8, 150-pound midfielder lettered four seasons for Coach Jeff Paulus. As a sophomore he earned second team All-Greater Spokane League honors, and was first team All-Great Northern League as a junior and senior as EVHS changed classifications and league affiliation. The Knights placed third in the Washington State 2A Championships as a senior. He captained the team his last two seasons. He also played for the Washington State Youth Soccer Association U19 State Cup champions in 2009. He has a 3.6 high school GPA.

Jesus Gonzalez
Forward Weston, Fla. St. Thomas Acquinas

Jesus Gonzales comes cross country from Weston, Fla., where he attended St. Thomas Acquinas High in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He earned four varsity letters, setting Florida High School Athletic Association records with 32 assists and scoring 11 goals as a junior. He was named the MVP of the State 5A championship match with two assists and a goal in 4-0 win over Durant High. As a senior he scored seven goals and had 12 assists as St. Thomas Acquinas won District and Regional titles. Freshman season had three goals and seven assists as team captured District and Regional championships, and as sophomore scored five goals with 18 assists as team repeated as District and Regional champions. He was named to the All-State team in 2011 and ’12, and was a three-time All-County selection from 2010-12. He also was called by Estudiantes de la Plata, an Argentinian Pro Team in the First Division and practiced with their Second Division team. He played for the ODP State and Regional teams in 2009 and turned down an opportunity to player for the ODP National team, instead playing for U.S. Weston Academy in 2010 and U.S. Kendall Academy from 2011-12. Carried a 4.1 GPA on a weighted scale of 5.0 and was a National Society of High School Scholar and Spanish Honor Society selection. He also earned a Lead Program Achievement from the University of Michigan and is a National Spanish Scholar.

Zach Hudson
Defender Phoenix, Ariz. Brophy College Prep

Zach Hudson joins the Bulldogs out of Brophy College Prep in Phoenix, Ariz., which also produced former Bulldog Phillippe Garre who played for the Bulldogs from 2007-10. Brophy lost in the Arizona State Division I championship match to Hamilton 2-1 in overtime his senior season, his lone year of varsity soccer. The 6-1, 180-pound defender scored two goals, one of them the winning goal on a corner kick with one minute to play in the quarterfinals of the Arizona Showcase. His club team was Arizona State League champions and Sereno Pro Classic champions from 2009-12, and captured the President’s Day Cup in 2009 and 2012. His club won the Surf Cup in 2008 and ’09, as well as the Far West Region League fall and spring titles and the Arizona Cup titles from 2009-12. Hudson also played on the Regional championship team in 2009, played in the finals in 2010 and advanced to the semifinals in 2011. His club team was a National finalist in 2009 and finished third in 2010. He was a kicker for the football team for one season, matching the school single-game record with nine PAT’s. His longest field goal was 46 yards to defeat Westview, the team going undefeated for the first time since 1978.

Aiden Huggins
Centerback Mukilteo, Wash. Archbishop Murphy

Aidan Huggins, a 5-11, 185-pound forward from Mukilteo, Wash., attended Archbishop Murphy in Everett, Wash. He was an honorable mention Cascade Conference selection as a freshman and sophomore. As a freshman he scored two goals and collected two assists and had two goals and an assist as a sophomore. His junior season he had a goal and an assist and them blossomed his senior season, capping his career with 27 goals and six assists in earning Cascade Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors. He was on the All-Area and All-State 2A first team as Archbishop Murphy finished third in the Washington State 2A Championships. Archbishop Murphy won the Cascade Conference and finished fourth in the Washington State 2A Championships his freshman season, shared the conference title and finished eighth in the State 2A tournament his sophomore season and took conference and District titles as a junior on the way to an eighth-place State 2A finish. He played for Tynecastle International Football Club in Everett, advancing to the Regional finals in 2008-09 and winning the Regional title in 2009-10. Tynecastle won the Puget Sound Premier League.

Ari Pall Isberg
Defender Reykjavik, Iceland Verslunarskoli Iceland

Ari Pall Isberg, a 6-1 defender, attended The Commercial College of Iceland in his hometown of Reykjavik. There is no high school soccer as we know it in the states, so he played for his hometown team Fylkir. He captained his U16 team in 2008 and the U19 team in 2010 and ’11. Fylkir captured the A Division U19 Cup in 2009. Isberg joins a long list of Icelanders to play for Gonzaga, the most recent being Stefan Eysteinsson who graduated in 2011. Gonzaga head coach Einar Thorarinsson is from Iceland.

Nikolai Littleton
Midfielder Oakland, Calif. Piedmont/Santa Barbara CC

Nikolai Littleton, a 5-11, 165-pound midfielder, scored 66 goals and had 22 assists in his career at Piedmont, Calif., High. The native of Oakland, Calif., was a Bay Shore Athletics League honorable mention selection and MVP of the Northern California Section championship games as a freshman. His sophomore season he was an All-BSAL second-team pick and earned first-team conference honors as a junior and senior. His senior season he was also first team All-East Bay, ranking sixth nationally in scoring and leading the state of California. He attended Santa Barbara City College for two seasons, leading the team in scoring with nine goals and six assists as a freshman in 2010 in earning Western State Conference honorable mention honors. The club went 16-3-3 overall and 10-1-3 to finish second in the WSC. As a sophomore he was All-WSC first team and the team advanced to the State final four as the team went 18-2-4 overall and 11-1-1 in WSC play. He finished his SBCC career with 11 goals and 17 assists.

Lars Ludwigs
Midfielder Woellstein, Germany Heinrich-Heine Gymnasium

Lars Ludwigs hails from Woellstein, Germany, where he attended Heinrich-Heine Gymnasium in Kaiserslautern, Germany. From ages 14-19 the 5-9, 160-pound midfielder lived at a soccer boarding school in Kaierslautern and played for the 1.FC Kaiserslautern U15 through U19 teams. The U17 teams won the South-West German championship from 2005-07. Nationally, he played for the U21 Rhineland in 2010-11, and played for 1.FC Kaiserslautern from 2008-09 in the U19 Bundesliga which is the highest German youth league. U17 Kaiserslautern advanced to the semifinals of the German Championship in 2006-07.

Luis Montealegre
Forward Boulder, Colo. Niwot

Luis Montealegre is a graduate of Niwot High in Longmont, Colo., outside his hometown of Boulder. He had 17 points in 13 matches as a senior. Niwot won the 2009 Colorado State 4A title, finished second in 2008 and 2011 and advanced to the quarterfinals in 2010. His senior season he was All-Northern League and All-Northern Region honorable mention, All-Area and All-State 4A despite playing in just 13 of 19 matches. Niwot was the first No. 11 seed to reach the Colorado State 4A semifinals and he scored three goals, including two match-winning goals. He was named winner of the Avery Award as team MVP. He began playing club soccer in Colorado as a U16, earning Colorado State runner-up. He most recently played for the Colorado Storm Copa U18 which won the Spring 2012 State Cup. Montealegre was a 4-year member of the Principal’s Honor Roll and National Honor Society member with a 4.1 weighted GPA on a scale of 5.0. He is the first generation of his family to grow up in the United States as the family is originally from Guatemala.

Amos Nash
Midfielder Boulder, Colo. Fairview

Amos Nash is another Coloradoan joining the Bulldogs this year, coming from Fairview High in his hometown of Boulder. The 5-11, 165-pound midfielder was a 3-year starter, scoring 10 goals and collecting 11 assists. Fairview went 21-7-5 with Nash in the starting line-up in his career. As a senior his six goals were second on the team and he led the team and the Colorado Front Range League in assists with 10. The team went 12-3-2 to win the Front Range title and second seed into the Colorado State 5A playoffs where Fairview was defeated in the second round. The team captain as a senior, he was a first-team All-Front Range League pick, All-State honorable mention and BoCoPreps All-Region honorable mention. Nash also competed in track in the 200 and 400 meters. He has a 3.72 high school GPA and was a Colorado All-Academic honorable mention honoree.

Andrew Newman
Defender Shoreline, Wash. Bishop Blanchet

Andrew Newman, a 6-0, 170-pound defender from Shoreline, Wash., attended Bishop Blanchet High in Seattle. His final two years he scored six goals and had three assists for 15 points, including four goals and an assist his senior season. He earned first team All-Metro League honors as a junior and senior. Also a wrestler, he went 25-8 his senior season, placing second in Region 3 and earning All-Academic State Wrestling honorable mention accolades. He has a 3.49 GPA.

Corey Taisey
Forward Spokane, Wash. Mead

Corey Taisey is the latest product of Spokane’s Mead High to join the Bulldogs, including current brothers Nick and Zach Hamer. Taisey was the Offensive MVP for the Greater Spokane League this past season and was a Washington State 4A All-State second team pick. He scored a pair of goals and added six assists for the Panthers, who won the GSL with an 8-1 record and finished 9-4 overall, losing in the first round of the Region 4A playoffs. His lone match-winning goal came in the 23rd minute in a 1-0 win over Lewis and Clark. As a junior he scored two goals and had three assists as Mead went 10-2 overall and 8-1 in the GSL to tie Ferris for the regular-season title, then downed the Saxons 2-1 for the District 8 4A crown. Mead’s season ended with a loss in the Region 4A playoffs.

Parker Victor
Midfielder Terre Haute, Ind. Shattuck-St. Mary's Academy (Faribault, Minn.)

Parker Victor attended Shattuck-St. Mary’s Academy in Faribault, Minn., after playing his freshman season at Terre Haute North Vigo High in his hometown of Terre Haute, Ind. Shattuck-St. Mary’s is a member of the U.S. Soccer Development Academy, winning the Central Conference Frontier Division this past season with a 10-2-2 conference mark and a 15-5-4 overall record. The 6-1, 170-pound midfielder started 10 of his 20 appearances. He was on the Indiana State Champion club teams with Westside United in 2007 and Carmel United in 2008. Carmel United also won the 2008 Vulcan Cup. His team placed third in the ODP National Championship. He has a 3.5 GPA and was on the honor roll his entire high school career.
