Clark Phillips, James Matern Earn All-WCC Preseason Nod
SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University men's soccer junior midfielder James Matern and sophomore forward Clark Phillips have been named to the 2012 preseason All-West Coast Conference team as voted by the conference head coaches.
Phillips, from Portland, Ore., who was the WCC Freshman of the Year last season, topped the Bulldogs with a team-leading 4 goals, 3 assists and 11 points in 2011. Matern, who sat out the 2010 season after undergoing hip surgery in October, came back to action last year to earn WCC second-team accolades and was one of three Bulldogs to start all 19 matches. The product of Spokane's Ferris High e recorded a pair of assists last season.
The WCC also released the preseason poll of coaches, the Bulldogs picked seventh with 7 points.
The University of San Diego has been selected to win the regular-season title this year, earning four first-place votes and 34 points overall.
Santa Clara University received two first-place votes and tallied 29 points to finish second, just three points ahead of the University of Portland. Loyola Marymount University earned 20 points, one first-place vote and was picked to finish fourth. Defending WCC champion Saint Mary's College and the University of San Francisco captured 16 points each and were picked to tie for fifth in the WCC standings.
Gonzaga opens the season one week from Friday with a match at the University of Washington. The home opener for the Bulldogs will be two days later when Seattle University visits for a 3 p.m. match.
