Series Record: This will be the second meeting between the two schools. Gonzaga earned the win in the only meeting; taking a 2-0 victory over the Commodores at the 2007 Vanderbilt Tournament.
GONZAGA WOMEN'S SOCCER HEADS TO TENNESSEE: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team heads to Tennessee to play two matches this weekend. The Bulldogs face first-time opponent Austin Peay University, members of the Ohio Valley Conference, Friday in Clarksville, Tenn. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. PT. The Zags close out the weekend facing Southeastern Conference member Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., Sunday at 11 a.m. PT. The Lady Govs are currently 2-2 on the year, while the Commodores are 1-1-1 overall.
ABOUT THE AUSTIN PEAY LADY GOVS: Austin Peay University women's soccer is currently 2-2. The Lady Govs opened the 2012 season with a 2-1 setback at the University of Arkansas. They rebounded to defeat the University of Arkansas Little Rock (UALR) and Appalachian State University each by the score of 3-1. Austin Peay most recently dropped a 1-0 decision to Lipscomb University. Andy Quiceno and Emily Perkins lead the team in goals; each having scored two goals this season.
ABOUT THE VANDERBILT COMMODORES: Vanderbilt University women's soccer is currently 1-1-1. The Commodores lone loss of the year is a 3-1 setabck to the then-No. 4th ranked Oklahoma State University. Vanderbilt is coming off a 1-1 double-overtime tie to the University of Oklahoma. Cheyna Williams leads the squad with two goals, while teammate Lina Granados has tallied a goal and notched an assist.
FIVE OF EIGHT GONZAGA GOALS SCORED BY ROOKIES: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team has scored eight goals thus far this season, with five of them being scored by rookies. Freshman Sila Tuiofea has scored two for the Bulldogs, while classmates Heather Johnson, Jessica Bennett and Kellyn Nelson each have tallied one.
AMY EDWARDS IN FOURTH YEAR AT THE HELM: Gonzaga University women's soccer head coach Amy Edwards begins her fourth year at the helm in 2012. Edwards currently holds a 23-33-3 overall record and is the second winningest coach in Gonzaga history. To see Edwards' full bio, go to GoZags.com.
FRESHMAN SILA TUIOFEA NOTCHES TWO GOALS ON TWO SHOTS: Gonzaga University women's soccer freshman Sila Tuiofea began her collegiate career scoring two goals on two shots in the Bulldogs 3-1 victory over the University of South Dakota, Aug. 17. Coming off the bench in the first half, Tuiofea notched a goal at the 31:35 mark (11 minutes after entering) to push GU's lead to 2-0. Her second goal and Gonzaga's third of the match came at the 71:44 mark. Tuiofea currently leads the team in points with six as she also has been credited with two assists.
EMMA DOLCETTI BEGINS THE SEASON OFF WITH A BANG: It was fitting Gonzaga University women's soccer senior Emma Dolcetti scored the Bulldogs first goal of 2012. Dolcetti, the Zags leading scorer in 2011 with five goals, notched her ninth career goal and Gonzaga's first of the new year two minutes into their 3-1 victory over the University of South Dakota, Aug. 17. Dolcetti is currently tied for the lead on the team in goals with two and her 10 career goals ties her for 10th in the Gonzaga career record book.
DEPTH AT GOALKEEPER: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team returns starting goalkeeper Susan Brown in 2012. Brown is joined on the squad by fellow senior keeper Alicia Berggren and freshman keeper Christie Tombari. Brown secured seven shutouts as a junior - her first year as a Bulldogs after transferring from Arkansas State University - and made 106 saves. Brown has 123 career saves as a Zag, four shy of breaking into the Gonzaga career record book for saves.
LOCAL PLAYERS DOT BULLDOG ROSTER: The Gonzaga University women's soccer squad has five players from the Spokane area. Senior defender Morgan Manchester (East Valley HS), is joined by redshirt freshman Mikayla Anderson (Mead HS), and true freshmen Jessica Bennett (Gonzaga Prep), Christie Tombari (Gonzaga Prep) and Lexi Clark (University HS).
CASSIE GEERDTS LOST FOR THE YEAR: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team lost Cassie Geerdts for the season. Geerdts' missed the 2011 campaign due to a knee injury right before the year. She was on pace to return to the squad in 2012 before suffering another knee injury.
COACHES TAB ZAGS FOR NINTH: The Gonzaga University women's soccer team has been selected to finish ninth in the 2012 West Coast Conference season according to a preseason vote of the league's head coaches. The Bulldogs received 10 votes in this year's poll, after losing three starters off a team that went 7-10-2 overall and 0-6-2 in the conference a year ago. Santa Clara University was selected the preseason favorite to win the 2012 West Coast Conference women's soccer title. The Broncos captured seven of eight possible first-place votes, and 63 overall points in the poll. The 2011 West Coast Conference co-champions Pepperdine University and the University of San Diego were picked to finish second and third, respectively, in this year's poll. Following its debut WCC campaign, Brigham Young University (BYU) finished fourth with 45 points. The University of Portland, a 2011 NCAA participant, earned 42 points along with a first place vote to finish fifth. The Pilots were followed by Saint Mary's College (26 points), Loyola Marymount University (21 points), and the University of San Francisco (17 points).
