Rowing Squads Open Season At the Head of the Pend Oreille

SPOKANE, Wash. -

ON TAP: The Gonzaga University men's and women's rowing programs opens their 2012-13 campaigns Saturday at the Head of the Pend Oreille, hosted by the Priest River Yacht Club on the Pend Oreille River in Priest River, Idaho. For the men's team, it will be an exhibition.

ABOUT THE PEND OREILLE REGATA: This is the second-annual Head of the Pend Oreille Regatta and the only rowing competition in the state of Idaho. The regatta is a time-trial competition, in which teams will race the clock. The Pend Oreille River Race course offers very good viewing at Bonner Park West and along Dufort Road and Highway 2.

WHO IS RACING AT THE HEAD OF THE PEND OREILLE: Gonzaga will compete in the 5K race, open to all classes of rowers. The women's team will race Washington State University. Also racing is Nelson RC, Coeur d'Alene RC, Spokane River RA and Spokane River/CDA.

11 a.m.: Women's Varsity 8+
11:15 a.m.: Men's Varsity 8+
12:15 p.m.: Women's Varsity 4+
12:30 p.m.: Men's and Women's Mixed 8+

MEN'S HEAD COACH DAN GEHN ON THE HEAD OF THE PEND OREILLE REGATTA: "The men are rowing exhibition, so we are rowing against ourselves and we haven't been out on the water much but these guys really like to pull hard and compete even with each other. Two even Varsity 8+'s will square off and we will row two mixed eights with our women, exhibition as well and just for fun. We are looking forward to this race because it started right in our backyard. Any chance we get to help rowing group in the Northwest we take it. Not to mention what a great community Priest River, Idaho; just great people, friendly and supportive. It's fun!"

WOMEN'S HEAD COACH GLENN PUTYRAE ON THE HEAD OF THE PEND OREILLE REGATTA: "We are very excited to see where we are. There are a lot of new faces in the Varsity 8+ and the Second Varsity 8+ and we are looking forward to racing. The people in Priest River put on a great event and we are happy to be able to participate again this year."
