SPOKANE, Wash. - The first day of the Gonzaga Invite is in the books for the Gonzaga University women's tennis team and head coach D.J. Gurule is pleased with what he saw.

"Overall we played much better than we did in Pullman two weeks ago," Gurule reflected. "We definitely still have some things to work on. One of the challenges of a young team is getting enough match play experience and every day we are putting in the work to be better."

The invite is broken down into six groups of singles play and four groups of doubles play.

In singles group A, Katie Edwards dropped her only match to Tori Troesch from the University of Portland 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 and Franziska Koehler defeated Mandy Mallen from Portland State University 3-6, 6-3, 10-7.

Senior Prue Teitzel won her group B match against Portland's Nastya Polyakova 6-4, 6-0 and Alexandra Tallas fell in a tight match to Saroop Dhatt from Portland 6-2, 3-6, 11-9. Dhatt also beat Isabell Klingert 4-6, 7-5, 11-9.

"Prue played well today," Gurule said. "I was impressed with her composure the entire match."

Group C saw Samantha Polayes beat Portland's Emily Gould 6-2, 6-3.

The Bulldogs picked up two wins in group D, E and F. In group D, Melanie Yates defeated Emily Mahairas from Portland 6-3, 6-3 and Alexandra Tallas took town Portland's Milagros Cubelli 6-1, 6-0.

Britta Stime handled Marina Reimers from Portland 6-4, 6-4 and Taurie Bjerken beat Portland State's Marina Todd 6-4, 6-2 in group E.

In group F, Sandy Dennett defeated Gabby Gorence in a close match 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 and Morgan McDivitt from Whitworth University 6-2, 6-1.

"It was great to play on such a beautiful day in Spokane," Gurule said. "We are looking forward to another great day of play tomorrow in both singles and doubles."

The Bulldogs played in three doubles matches on Friday and won them all. In group B, Teitzel and Koehler narrowly beat Portland's Cubelli and Troesch 9-8 (3). Polayes and Bjerken defeated Portland's Gould and Gorence 8-4 in group C. Dennett and Stime took care of business against Mahairas and Reimers from Portland 8-2 in group D.

The Zags return to action Saturday at 10 a.m. in final day of the Gonzaga Invite at Gonzaga Prep.
