Three Bulldogs Have A Perfect Weekend
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team finished the Gonzaga Invite Saturday at Gonzaga Prep with three players having a perfect weekend.
"Much like yesterday, I thought we had another great day," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "We played tough competition all weekend and it was what we needed. This experience is going to really help us all year long."
The invite was broken down into six groups of round robin singles play and four groups of round robin doubles play.
Katie Edwards won her lone match group A. She defeated Mandy Mallen from Portland State University 3-6, 7-5, 10-6.
Teitzel picked up two wins in group B. Teitzel beat Daria Burobina from Portland State 7-5, 6-3 and the University of Portland's Saroop Dhatt 6-4, 6-1.
In group C, Samantha Polayes picked up two victories over Kelsey Frey of Portland State 6-3, 7-6 (5) and Sarah Mooney from Whitworth University 8-7 (3). Alexandra Tallas also won her match in the group over Portland State's Alexa McDonald.
Senior Taurie Bjerken went 1-1 in group E. Bjerken defeated Portland's Marina Reimers 6-2, 6-0 but lost to Megan Govi from Portland State 6-1, 6-0.
Finally in group F, both Sandy Dennett and Hanley Caras picked up hard fought victories. Dennett battled and prevailed over Marina Todd from Portland State 6-3, 7-6 (3). Caras defeated Caylee Lamm from Whitworth 6-7 (6), 6-2, 10-2.
It was doubles where the Bulldogs left its mark. The team combined for a perfect day winning all six matches.
"I was very pleased with our doubles play this weekend," Gurule said. "Katie and Melanie, Prue and Sissi, and Britta and Sandy all won their doubles matches in solid form."
In the group A, the duo of Edwards and Yates won both of their matches against Portland's Nastya Polyakova and Dhatt 8-4; and over Portland States' Mallen and Frey 8-4. The Bulldog duo of Teitzel and Koehler won its group B match 8-3 over Portland's Milagros Cubelli and Tori Troesch.
The pair of Isabell Klingert and Tallas won in group C over Portland State's Todd and Megan Govi 8-1. The Bulldogs rounded out doubles with Klingert and Tallas beating Mahairas and Reimers from Portland 8-7 (1); and Dennett and Britta Stime defeating Saryn Mooney and Jessi Steele from Whitworth 8-4.
"I definitely saw improvement from our first tournament in Pullman," Gurule said. "We still have some work to do before we leave for California in a couple weeks, but we are making positive strides every day."
The Zags are off next weekend but return to action Friday October 5 in Moraga, Calif., for the Saint Mary's Invitational.
