Nazal and Smith Advance At Boise State Appleton Classic
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University men's tennis player Alvaro Nazal advanced to the final of the Boise State Appleton Classic Saturday with two victories in the orange draw.
"I am very excited for Alvaro," head coach Peter MacDonald said. "He was down in his semifinal match but came back to beat the No. 4 seed. He is playing at a high level and has a real opportunity to win the final Sunday."
Nazal's quarterfinal match was against No. 1 seed Alex Rovello from the University of Oregon. The Santiago, Chile, native took care of business 6-4, 6-4 and advanced the semifinal where he defeated No. 4 seed Nathan Sereke from Boise State University 0-6, 6-3, 6-1.
The final will take place Sunday at 11 a.m. when Nazal faces No. 2 seed Hans Hach from Abilene Christian University.
Freshman Hayden Smith had a two-win day as well. In the blue draw Smith advanced to semifinals by defeating Idaho State University's Austin Miller 6-3, 6-2 and Abilene Christian's Alfredo Desiati 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
"Hayden is playing loose and he is executing in his matches," MacDonald said. "The more experience he gets the better he will continue to be. Like Alvaro, he has a big opportunity Sunday."
Smith will play his semifinal Sunday at 10 a.m. against the No. 1 seed from University of Portland Ratan Gill.
