SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego scored two first-half goals, and it was all the Toreros would need in handing Gonzaga University's men's soccer team a 2-0 West Coast Conference setback Sunday.

The loss was the fourth straight for the Bulldogs who fell to 4-7-0 overall and 0-4-0 in WCC action. USD moved to 5-6-0, 3-1-0. Sunday was the first time the Bulldogs had been blanked since back-to-back 3-0 losses to fourth-ranked UC Santa Barbara in the Gonzaga Nike Soccer Classic Sept. 2 and at Oregon State University Sept. 15.

The Toreros struck early, Matthew Chavez sending a long pass to Sergio Lopez who found the far corner at 4:05 for his first goal of the season. The second tally came at 20:17 when Patrick Wallen's penalty kick beat Gonzaga keeper Keane Ellis, making his second straight career start after getting the nod in Friday's 2-1 loss at Loyola Marymount University. It was Wallen's third goal of the season.

USD's Torrey DeArmas had hit the crossbar and the ball bounded in front of Wallen who appeared to have an easy rebound goal. But he was pulled down from behind inside the 6-yard box and the PK was called. Wallen's shot went into the lower right corner as Ellis dove the opposite direction.

In addition to DeArmas' shot off the crossbar the Toreros had two other shots hit the post - USD's Connor Brandt hit the post in the 37th minute and Dan Delgado drew iron in the 52nd minute.

The Bulldogs had an offensive thrust shortly after the PK goal. Zach Hamer's shot forced USD keeper Drew Ilijevski to make one of his four saves and Clark Phillips shot the rebound high. The Bulldogs got a corner kick, and seconds later Lars Ludwigs shot high. Gonzaga would not get another shot until the 43rd minute.

Ellis, who redshirted his freshman year and sat out last season with a broken leg, had three saves.

The Bulldogs will return home for a pair of West Coast Conference matches this week, hosting Saint Mary's College Friday at 3 p.m. and Santa Clara University Sunday at 2 p.m.
