Nazal Captures Second Tournament Of Fall Season
BOISE, Idaho - Gonzaga University men's tennis player Alvaro Nazal capped a spectacular weekend by winning the Boise State Appleton Classic Sunday.
"I am so happy for Alvaro," head coach Peter MacDonald said. "Considering the level of talent at this tournament all weekend, he should be proud. He played fantastic in every match and completed a fine weekend of play."
Nazal won the orange draw title after beating Hans Hach from Abilene Christian University 6-0, 6-4. Hach was the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
Nazal defeated the No. 1, 2 and 4 seed in his draw to win the title.
"Alvaro should be honored and proud of what he accomplished this weekend," MacDonald said. "It was no easy task but he came in all weekend and battled. It is a tremendous effort and he continues to be on a roll this fall season."
Nazal was not the only Zag to have a winning day, senior Levin Guillermo won the orange draw consolation bracket. Guillermo clinched the consolation draw when Charles Norman from Idaho State University forfeited due to injury.
"You cannot take anything away from Levin this weekend,"
MacDonald said. "He battled his way through the consolation draw and I would
have liked his chances in the final. He also played at a high level and
competed in every match."
In the blue draw, freshman Hayden Smith dropped his closely contested semifinal match to No. 1 seed Ratan Gill from the University of Portland 4-6, 6-1, 6-1.
"After this weekend Hayden should hold his head up high," MacDonald said. "He played at a high level and met all expectations. He is young and talented. His game will only improve and he will continue to contribute to this team."
Gonzaga is back in action in two weeks as they travel to Moraga, Calif., for the ITA Regionals beginning Oct. 19.
