SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's basketball team hosted its third-annual FAN FEST at the McCarthey Athletic Center Saturday afternoon and 1,704 came out to see their first glimpse of the 2012-13 squad.
Prior to the Blue and White scrimmage - the marquee event - 13th year head coach Kelly Graves addressed the enthusiastic crowd and the Bulldogs showed off their dance moves with a prepared routine to 'I Cry' by Flo Rida. The routine, which the Zags had been practicing since Monday with the leadership of junior Stephanie Golden and senior Meghan Winters, was a huge hit with the fans.
After the dance was over, the Blue and White scrimmage commenced.
Sophomore Sunny Greinacher, who represented the German National team this summer, led the Blue team to a 55-44 victory hitting 5-of-6 from the field, and sinking 3-of-4 from the charity stripe for a game-tying high 13 points. Golden was also a strong force for the Blue team nearly finishing the game with a double-double, scoring nine points and grabbing nine rebounds.
Team Blue closed out the contest hitting 20-of-42 from the field (47.6 percent), including 5-of-9 3-pointers (55.6 percent) and was 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) from the free throw line.
Team White, who roared out to an early 18-7 advantage and held the lead until the 11:32 mark of the second half, was led by transfer Lindsay Sherbert with 13 points. The redshirt junior, who will sit out the 2012-13 season due to NCAA transfer rules, sank 5-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-4 free throws. She also added six rebounds and had a game-high five assists.
