Volleyball Back Home Thursday Against LMU

THIS WEEK: Gonzaga University women's volleyball returns home this week as they take on Loyola Marymount University Thursday and No. 23 Pepperdine University Saturday. Thursday's match starts at 6 p.m. and on Saturday play begins at noon. Both matches will be played in the Martin Centre on the Gonzaga campus.

ABOUT LOYOLA MARYMOUNT: Loyola Marymount University enters the week two games above .500 at 11-9 and 2-5 in West Coast Conference play. Last week the Lions de­feated Santa Clara University 3-0, but fell to the University of San Diego 3-0. LMU's other WCC victory came at Saint Mary's College on Sept. 20. Kathleen Luft leads the team with 291 kills followed by Litara Keil's 238. Tom Black coaches the Lions in his third-season at the helm.

ABOUT PEPPERDINE: Pepperdine University enters the week as the No. 23 ranked team in AVCA's top 25 poll. Coached by Nina Matthies the Waves are 14-7 overall and 3-4 in West Coast Conference play. Last week the Waves defeated the University of San Fran­cisco 3-1 and Santa Clara University 3-2. Jazmine Orozco leads the team with 267 kills and Kellie Woolever has put up 830 assists.

BRING A BUDDY NIGHT THURSDAY: The Gonzaga University volleyball team faces Loyola Marymount University Thursday at 6 p.m. and it's Bring a Buddy night. For only $10 you get 2 tickets, 2 hot dogs and 2 sodas! There will also be a lunch bag giveaway where the first 200 fans in attendance will receive a GU lunch bag courtesy of Group Health!

CELEBRATE ALUMNI DAY SATURDAY: Come to the Martin Centre Saturday at noon to cheer on the Bulldogs prior to Kraziness in the Kennel. Fans who attend the volleyball match will receive direct admission into Kraziness in the Kennel from the Martin Centre at 3 p.m. Gonzaga is also welcoming back former volleyball players for Alumni Day on Saturday

GONZAGA AMONGST WCC BEST: Gonzaga University volleyball currently ranks in the top 5 in the West Coast Conference in service aces and blocks. The Zags trail Santa Clara Univer­sity (1.52) and Saint Mary's College (1.49) with a 1.39 aces-per-set average. The Bulldogs are No. 4 in blocks-per-set with 2.32 behind BYU (2.92), the University of San Diego (2.40) and Saint Mary's (2.33).

BLINN'S BRILLIANT SEASON: Redshirt freshman Savannah Blinn is having an outstanding season for the Gonzaga University women's volleyball team. The outside hitter is currently No. 11 in the NCAA with 0.49 aces-per-set. The Lewiston, Idaho, native also leads the West Coast Conference in service aces with 36. Blinn is also tied in the WCC with a match high of 26 kills with Ester De Vries from the University of San Francisco.

FIVE FRESHMAN START: For the first time this season Gonzaga University head coach Dave Gantt started five freshmen against Saint Mary's College on Oct. 13. The starting lineup consisted of true freshmen setter Lauren Joseph, true freshman outside hitter Jordan Gasser, redshirt freshman middle blocker Kalistina Takau, redshirt freshman defensive specialist Deanna Nielson and redshirt outside hitter Savannah Blinn. Junior middle blocker Meredith Crenshaw and junior libero Kristina Lavrisha were also on the starting lineup.

BULLDOGS MOVING UP IN NCAA RPI: Of the 330 NCAA Division I volleyball programs, Gonzaga University is No. 146 in the latest RPI ranking.

SIX REDSHIRTS IN 2012: Gonzaga University volleyball is redshirting six athletes during the 2012 season. Freshman redshirts are middle blockers Imani Wimbush, Sarah Bradley and Paige Folger; right side hitter Halle McCullough and setter Lyndsay Palmer. Junior libero Kathleen Wright is also redshirting due to an injury.

GANTT BACK FOR HIS FOURTH SEASON: Gonzaga University women's volleyball head coach Dave Gantt returns for his fourth season at the helm of the Bulldogs. BULLDOGS PICKED NINTH IN WCC COACHES PRESEASON POLL: The Gonzaga University women's volleyball team has been selected to finish ninth in the 2012 West Coast Confer­ence season according to a preseason vote of the league's head coaches. The Bulldogs received 11 votes in this year's poll after losing three starters from last years team.
