SPOKANE, Wash. -

ON TAP: The Gonzaga University men's and women's rowing programs welcome Washington State University to the Gonzaga Boathouse Saturday for their annual Head of the Spokane. Racing begins at 9 a.m.

RACING FORMAT: As is the case with races at Upriver Dam, racing is done in flights with boats sent off the start line in intervals. Placing is determined by the time after all boats in a class have crossed the finish line. Boats will be sent down the river at shorter intervals, resulting in less time between flights. The first flight will begin at 9 a.m., with the last flight set to head down the river at 11 a.m.

WHO DO THE MEN'S VARSITY EIGHT RETURN?: The Gonzaga University men's varsity 8+, which finished 18th in the nation at the 2012 IRA National Championships, returns seven of nine members. Returning this year are seniors Sahan Fernando, Stuart McDonald, Stephen McEvoy, Bennett Shultz and juniors Kayla Cartelli and Mike MacPherson.

WHO DO THE WOMEN'S VARSITY EIGHT RETURN?: The Gonzaga University women's Varsity 8+ return five of nine members of the 2011 Varsity 8+ boat. Returning from last year and rowing in the Varsity 8+ boat Saturday are senior Christy Mentele, juniors Sarah Atkins and Jordan Davies, and sophomores Erin Russell and Casey Burt.

GONZAGA MEN'S ROWING HEAD COACH DAN GEHN'S THOUGHTS ON THE HEAD OF THE SPOKANE: "The guys have worked very hard this fall coming in to this first head on head competition. I know they are eager to test their speed. The Cougs always race us tough so I don't expect this year to be any different. A lot of guys from last year's Varsity 8+ are in the boat again but several sophomores have asserted themselves early and this will be their first race in the Varsity 8+ event.

"I think there will be a large draw for the race, weather permitting, because of Fall Family Weekend, Alumni Weekend and the 125th Anniversary celebrations."

GONZAGA WOMEN'S ROWING HEAD COACH GLENN PUYTRAE'S THOUGHTS ON THE HEAD OF THE SPOKANE: "It is always great to have the opportunity to compete at home. It is even better to be able to compete in front of your family, friends, and alumni. We know the challenge we face in WSU and plan to do our best to compete to our capability.

"This is an exciting weekend for the team and the entire Gonzaga Community."

SUNDAY RACING: It is also Alumni Weekend, Fall Family Weekend and the 125th Anniversary at Gonzaga University and the Bulldogs will host Class Day Races at the Boathouse on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. The rowing programs will dedicate one of their new eight boats on Sunday in conjunction with the 125th celebration theme.
