MORAGA, Calif. - Alvaro Nazal broke through Saturday and won his match 6-3, 6-4 over Tom Pham from Santa Clara University to advance to the round of 16 at the 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals.

"I am so proud Alvaro," head coach Peter MacDonald said. "This is a great moment for the program to have a player this far in the tournament. This is a great example of hard work, smart playing and ambition. Alvaro deserves this opportunity."

Gonzaga had two other players who had the opportunity to advance to the round of 16. However Olivier Jamin lost to the fifth seeded Matt Kandath from Stanford University 6-3, 6-3 and Levin Guillermo fell to the eighth seed John Morrissey 7-6 (5), 6-0 from Stanford.

"Both guys played competitive matches," MacDonald said. "They should be really proud of what they accomplished this weekend. This leaves me really optimistic about what we can carry over to the spring season."

In the main doubles draw the Bulldogs had two teams advance to the round of 32 but no further.

The duo of Nazal and Pablo Mosquera Perez defeated Eduardo Bringold and Stefan Farrar from Eastern Washington University 8-0. The pair would fall in their next match to the ninth seed Aleksander Malko and Marek Marksoso from Sacramento State University 8-4.

Jack Schoebel and Jamin won their round of 64 match 8-5 over Eastern Washington's Kyle Koetje and Tomas Aranquiz. The top seeded pair of Jack Mullen and Robin Cambier from the University of Oregon eliminated the Zags 8-1 in the round of 32.

Gonzaga's other tandem lost in the round of 64. Hayden Smith and Guillermo lost 8-1 to Henrik Raag and Niranjan Ram from Sacramento State.

"Doubles are always a challenge but I felt confident about our play this weekend," MacDonald said. "We are talented enough to compete in any match and this continues to be a great opportunity to improve."

In the consolation singles draw Mosquera advanced to the third round after beating the University of Pacific's Daniel Alameh 6-3, 6-3. Hayden Smith is also in the third round after a second round bye.

Schoebel moved on to the fourth round after defeating Alec Wagner from Saint Mary's College 6-1, 6-4.

The Bulldogs return to the court Sunday and at noon Nazal plays Ben McLachlan from the University of California for a bid at the quarterfinals.
