Edwards Eliminated At ITA Regionals
PALO ALTO, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's tennis team was eliminated in both the singles and the doubles draw at the 2012 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals Saturday.
"Even though we came up short on some of our matches," head coach D.J. Gurule said. "I think we gained some important experience. Our play is showing our team that we are capable of competing with Pacific 12 programs and it will make us better for the spring."
Katie Edwards was the lone Zag to play in the open draw Saturday but she fell in her round of 32 match to Kristie Ahn from Stanford University 6-0, 6-0.
The Bulldogs had two doubles pairings alive entering Saturday.
However the duo of Samantha Polayes and Prue Teitzel lost to the top seeded pair of Stacey Tan and Ellen Tsay from Stanford 8-1 in the round of 32. Likewise the duo of Edwards and Melanie Yates dropped to Natali Coronel and Julija Lukac from the University of Washington 8-6.
"Our team goal is to improve each day and I think we are doing exactly that," Gurule said. "I am pleased with our team effort and determination. We will look to close out our fall season on a high note tomorrow."
The Zags will resume play on Sunday in consolation matches.
