Volleyball Hosting No. 18 BYU Thursday
THIS WEEK: Gonzaga University women's volleyball will have one home and one road match this week. Thursday the Bulldogs will face No. 18 BYU in the Martin Centre at 6 p.m. Saturday the Bulldogs will travel to the Gersten Pavilion to face Loyola Marymount University at noon.
ABOUT BYU: No. 18 BYU volleyball enters the week sitting second in the West Coast Conference standings at 7-2. Overall the Cougars are 19-2. Last week BYU split its matches by beating No. 25 Saint Mary's College 3-0 in Provo but falling to Santa Clara 3-2 at the Leavey Center. On the court two-time WCC Player of the Week Jennifer Hamson leads the team with 297 kills. Hamson also leads the WCC with a 4.01 kills-per-set average. BYU is coached by Shawn Olmstead.
ABOUT LOYOLA MARYMOUNT: Loyola Marymount University volleyball comes into the week winners of three of their previous four matches. The Lions swept last week with 3-0 victories against the University of Portland and Gonzaga University. Kathleen Left is No. 2 in the WCC with a 3.99 kills-per-set average and has 319 total. Tom Black is coach of the Lions in his third-season at the helm.
PACK THE HOUSE THURSDAY: The Gonzaga University volleyball team faces No. 18 BYU Thursday in the Martin Centre at 6 p.m and it is dollar ticket night! Come support the Zags and pack the house for what is sure to be an exciting match!
THREE HOME MATCHES LEFT: After the Gonzaga University volleyball team faces No. 18 BYU Thursday the team will only have three remaining home matches. Those matches are Nov. 8 against Saint Mary's College, Nov. 10 against San Diego and Nov. 15 against Portland. All matches will be played at the Martin Centre on the Gonzaga campus.
WILD WILD WEST: Gonzaga University women’s volleyball continues to play in a nationally recognized conference. Currently four West Coast Conference schools are ranked in the AVCA’s top 25 poll. The University of San Diego is ranked No. 14, BYU sits at No. 18, No. 23 is held by Pepperdine University and Saint Mary’s College is No. 25.
GONZAGA AMONGST WCC BEST: Gonzaga University volleyball currently ranks in the top 5 in the West Coast Conference in service aces and blocks. The Zags trail Santa Clara University (1.53), Saint Mary’s College (1.51) Loyola Marymount University (1.38) with a 1.35 aces-per-set average. The Bulldogs are No. 4 in blocks-per-set with 2.25 behind BYU (2.95), the University of San Diego (2.32) and Saint Mary’s (2.27).
BLINN’S BRILLIANT SEASON: Redshirt freshman Savannah Blinn is having an outstanding season for the Gonzaga University women’s volleyball team. The outside hitter is currently No. 6 in the NCAA with 0.51 aces-per-set. The Lewiston, Idaho, native also leads the West Coast Conference in service aces with 40. Blinn is also tied in the WCC with a match high of 26 kills with Ester De Vries from the University of San Francisco and is No. 7 in kills-per-set with 3.39.
FIVE FRESHMAN START: For the first time this season Gonzaga University head coach Dave Gantt started five freshmen against Saint Mary’s College on Oct. 13. The starting lineup consisted of true freshmen setter Lauren Joseph, true freshman outside hitter Jordan Gasser, redshirt freshman middle blocker Kalistina Takau, redshirt freshman defensive specialist Deanna Nielson and redshirt outside hitter Savannah Blinn. Junior middle blocker Meredith Crenshaw and junior libero Kristina Lavrisha were also on the starting lineup.
GANTT BACK FOR HIS FOURTH SEASON: Gonzaga University women’s volleyball head coach Dave Gantt returns for his fourth season at the helm of the Bulldogs. BULLDOGS PICKED NINTH IN WCC COACHES PRESEASON POLL: The Gonzaga University women’s volleyball team has been selected to finish ninth in the 2012 West Coast Conference season according to a preseason vote of the league’s head coaches. The Bulldogs received 11 votes in this year’s poll after losing three starters from last years team.
