Zags Host South Dakota Sunday At 1 p.m. In Rare Matinee
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University and the University of South Dakota will meet for the first time on the basketball hardwood Sunday when the Coyotes visit the McCarthey Athletic Center for a 1 p.m. matchup.
The Bulldogs come into the Sunday matinee undefeated after downing Southern Utah University 103-65 in the season opener and handling West Virginia University 84-50 last Monday in a pair of home openers.
The Coyotes come into Sunday's game to conclude a busy week. USD played Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the Global Sports Showcase at the University of Wyoming. USD lost to Southern 83-79, to the host Cowboys 71-51 and defeated North Carolina Central 81-69. True freshmen Tyler Flack and Casey Kasperbauer scored 21 and 12 points, respectively, in the win.
Gonzaga assistant coach Ray Giacoletti knows all about the South Dakota and its head coach Dave Boots. Giacoletti met Boots and the Coyotes six times during his tenure at North Dakota State University as the two teams were members of the NCAA Division II North Central Conference. Boots had the upper hand in the series, going 4-2 against Giacoletti. One of the best games in the series was NDSU's 105-101 overtime victory at South Dakota during the 1999 season. Giacoletti was head coach at NDSU from 1998-00 prior to becoming head coach at Eastern Washington University.
