SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Gonzaga University junior forward James Matern has been named to the West Coast Conference Men's Soccer All-Academic team announced by WCC Commissioner Jamie Zaninovich.

Seven Bulldogs also received honorable mention accolades - senior midfielder Casey Ames out of Spokane's Lewis and Clark High, junior keeper Ryan Caballero of Bellarmine Prep in Sunnyvale, Calif., sophomore forward Zach Hamer of Spokane's Mead High, senior defender Erik Nielsen of Boise, Idaho, High, junior defender Andrew Owenson of Cardinal Newman High in Sonoma, Calif., sophomore forward Nate Pacheco of Pius X in Albuquerque, NM, and sophomore forward Clark Phillips of Tualatin High and Portland, Ore.

Matern, a product of Spokane's Ferris High, carries a 3.64 GPA in mathematics. He returned to action last season after sitting out the 2010 campaign after undergoing hip surgery. He has earned All-WCC honors in each of the three seasons he has played - honorable mention and All-Freshman recognition in 2009, All-WCC second team last year and honorable mention accolades for the recently completed season.

Ames has a 3.30 GPA in philosophy. He appeared in 18 matches this season with two starts, a goal and an assist. Caballero carries a 3.26 GPA in history. He started 12 of his 13 appearances in the net this season with a 1.66 GAA. Hamer has a 3.30 GPA in human physiology. He had a pair of goals while starting four of his 18 appearances this season.

Nielsen is a civil engineering major with a 3.20 GPA. After coming to the Bulldogs as a forward he made the transition to defense and capped his career with 17 starts in 19 appearances this season. Owenson, a mechanical engineering major, carries a 3.41 GPA. He returned to action this season after suffering a broken foot in the third match of 2011, starting 11 of his 18 appearances this season and his lone goal of the season was a match winner.

Pacheco has a 3.54 GPA in business administration. His season was cut short when he suffered a sprained ankle that sidelined him for the season after starting five of the first 11 matches. Phillips has a 3.53 GPA in business administration. He led the Bulldogs in goals with 5 and points with 12 to go with a pair of assists this season. He was the 2011 WCC Freshman of the Year.

To be considered for WCC All-Academic honors a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while also being a significant contributor to his team.
