PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico - The Gonzaga University women's basketball team earned a 80-66 victory over Winthrop University Thursday in the consolation game of the Hardwood Tournament of Hope in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Bulldogs finished the tournament in third with a 2-1 record and are now 6-1 on the season.

Four players scored in double-figures to lead the Zags to their 14-point victory. Freshman Elle Tinkle scored a career-high 14 points; her first double-digit performance of her career. Junior Jazmine Redmon added 13 points, 11 of which came in the second half, while junior Haiden Palmer chipped in 12 points all coming in the final half. Closing out the double-figure scoring was senior Taelor Karr with 10.

Redmon and Karr each added six assists as Gonzaga finished with 23 on 30 baskets. For the game the Bulldogs shot 47.7 percent (31-of-65) from the field, including 38.9 percent (7-of-18) on 3-pointers and were a season-best 86.4 percent (11-of-13) at the charity stripe.

Winthrop (2-3) had three players in double-digits and was led by the leading scorer in the game Dequesha McClanahan with 21.

Tinkle and redshirt freshman Shelby Cheslek were the players to lead Gonzaga to its 42-34 halftime advantage. Tinkle was perfect from the field, hitting 4-of-4, including her first collegiate 3-pointer, and drained both free throws for a team-leading nine points. Cheslek also came off the bench to chip in eight points on 4-of-5 shooting.

Early in the game layups by Cheslek bookended between a 3-pointer by Taelor Karr had Gonzaga opening up a 7-point lead at 14-7 at the 13:04 mark. Tinkle then got into the action draining a nothing-but-net 3-pointer followed by a pull-up jumper to push the Zags edge to 19-10.

Gonzaga's largest lead in the opening 20 minutes was 12 at 30-18 at 6:14. Senior Meghan Winters nailed a 3-pointer followed by a fast break layup by Karr after a steal was made by Palmer.

The first seven minutes of the second half belonged to Redmon and Palmer as they combined for all of Gonzaga's 19 points. Palmer had eight points in the opening stretch while Redmon added 11 including an old-fashion 3-point play that put the score at 59-47 with a little over 13 minutes to play in the game.

Tinkle was the first player other than Redmon and Palmer to score in the final half, making a lay-in at 6:13 to make the score 75-57.

The Bulldogs largest lead of the contest was 19 at 80-61. It was sophomore Danielle Walter that gave GU the large advantage with the teams seventh 3-pointer of the game.

Gonzaga now regroups after playing five games in seven games. Its next contest is Sunday, Dec. 2 when it hosts Stanford University, the top team in the nation.
