Bulldogs Continue Quest For WCC Title Against Saint Mary's
SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University is out to re-capture the West Coast Conference regular-season crown, and the team that wrested the title away visits Thursday when Saint Mary's College comes to town for an 8 p.m. contest in front of another sellout crowd.
Gonzaga owned a streak of 11 straight WCC titles which was the best active streak in the country and two behind UCLA's string of 13 straight Pacific-10 (now Pacific-12) Conference titles from 1967-79.
Gonzaga holds a 54-27 lead in the series with Saint Mary's College. The Bulldogs won 28-of-31 meetings from 1999-10, including 17 straight from 1999-04. Gonzaga won the two regular-season meetings in 2010, but the Gaels have won four of the last seven outings. The teams split the regular-season games last season, each winning at home, with SMC claiming the WCC Tournament Championship with a 78-74 overtime victory over the Zags.
