Gonzaga and Butler have split the previous two meetings. Butler won the first battle of Bulldogs Nov. 24, 2006, upsetting Gonzaga 79-71 in the title game of the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT in Madison Square Garden. Gonzaga had defeated No. 2 University of North Carolina in the semifinals and was considered a heavy favorite in the final. The Zags defeated Butler last season 71-55 in the McCarthey Athletic Center.
The Bulldogs can match their season-opening 9-game winning streak with a victory Saturday. The Zags' lone loss was an 85-74 home loss to then-13th-ranked University of Illinois. Gonzaga's 17-1 start is the best in school history, bettering the 12-1 start by the 1967 squad.
