Olynyk Named To Capital One Academic All-America Team

            TOWSON, Md. - Gonzaga University center Kelly Olynyk has been named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men's Basketball First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

            Olynyk becomes the first men's basketball player to earn first-team Academic All-America recognition since Dan Dickau in 2002. Blake Stepp was a third-team selection in 2003 and a second-team honoree in 2004. Men's soccer player George Josten was the last Bulldog to earn first team Academic All-America accolades in 2007.

            In all, 15 Bulldog student-athletes have accumulated 25 Academic All-America honors since 1978.

            The 7-0, 238-pound Olynyk graduated in December with a 3.53 grade point average in accounting and is currently enrolled in the MBA program at Gonzaga. He was named to the Capital One/CoSIDA All-District 8 first team to earn a spot on the national ballot.

            Olynyk is averaging 17.9 ppg and 6.9 rpg for the third ranked and 26-2 Bulldogs who are 13-0 in the West Coast Conference. He scored a career-high 33 points this season at Santa Clara University and has hauled in a career-high 10 rebounds twice this season, including at Santa Clara for his lone double-double of the season.

            Joining Olynyk on the first team are Aaron Craft of Ohio State University with a 3.92 grade point average in nutrition (pre-med); Mason Plumlee, Duke University, 3.36 in psychology; Matthew Sullivan, Brown University, 4.00 in economics, and Cody Zeller, Indiana University, 3.44 GPA in business. Craft was named the Academic All-America Team Member of the Year.
