SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University’s men’s soccer team will open the 2013 season against cross-state rival University of Washington Aug. 30 at Gonzaga Soccer Field.

The match is part of a 19-match schedule assembled by head coach Einar Thorarinsson as he embarks on his 19th season at the helm of the Bulldogs.

“We looking forward to that first match,” Thorarinsson said. “That match will tell us a lot about where we stand. We’re expecting a big crowd for this rival match.”

The Huskies have dominated the series, holding a 23-1-1 lead in the series, the lone Bulldog win coming at home in 2007. Washington took last year’s match in Seattle 2-1 in overtime. Washington tied the contest in the 76th minute and got the decisive goal at 96:06.

Gonzaga’s other non-conference home match will be Sept. 29 against Seattle University.

The Zags will play in one tournament this fall, heading to the University of Illinois-Chicago for the UIC Soccer Classic. Gonzaga will face the host Flames Sept. 20 at 5:30 p.m. PDT, then face the University of Wisconsin at 9 a.m. PDT Sept. 22 to conclude play in the tournament.

Gonzaga and the Flames have met twice previously, the last a 1-0 Gonzaga victory for the championship of the 2010 Seattle University Tournament. UIC took a 4-3 victory in the 2003 Diadora Classic hosted by Oregon State University. The Bulldogs and Wisconsin have met three times, the last in the 2007 Panther Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the Badgers taking a 1-0 verdict.

The Bulldogs will open West Coast Conference play on the road Oct. 4-6, facing Saint Mary’s College Oct. 4 and the University of San Francisco two days later. The Zags will play three straight WCC home matches Oct. 11 against Loyola Marymount University, Oct. 13 against defending WCC champion and 2012 NCAA Soccer Cup semifinalist University of San Diego and Oct. 16 when Pacific Northwest rival University of Portland comes to town.

Gonzaga will conclude WCC action at home Nov. 15 against USF and Nov. 17 against Saint Mary’s.

“The WCC will once again be one of the most competitive conferences in the country. With three of our first five WCC matches at home we’ll be looking to get off to a good start in conference play,” Thorarinsson said.
