SPOKANE, Wash. –  For the first time in program history, the Gonzaga University women’s basketball team starts the season ranked in the Associated Press Top 25. The Bulldogs checked in at No. 25 as the Associated Press released the preseason rankings Friday morning.

Gonzaga received 81 votes to edge out West Virginia University, who got 77 votes, for the final spot.

The Zags were one of the squads ‘also receiving votes’ in the AP Preseason Poll four times since 2008-09, including the 2011-12 preseason when they were the third team ‘also receiving votes’, but weren’t able to break into the poll until this season.

The University of Connecticut was the unanimous No. 1 with all 36 first-place votes and 900 votes total.

Four Bulldog opponents for 2013-14 are also ranked; Stanford University is No. 3 and Preseason WNIT participants University of Louisville, University of Oklahoma, and LSU are No. 5, No. 11 and No. 15, respectively.

Gonzaga returns 12 letterwinners, including four starters, from its squad that finished 27-6 overall, 15-1 in the West Coast Conference, won its ninth-straight WCC title, and made its fifth-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament a season ago.

The Zags open the regular season Nov. 8 when they host the University of Idaho in the opening game of the Preseason WNIT. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
