Johnson All-WCC Second Team, Baggerly Honorable Mention
SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Gonzaga University women’s sophomore Heather Johnson was named to the All-West Coast Conference second team as the conference office announced its annual awards Tuesday. Freshman Karley Baggerly earned All-WCC honorable mention honors and a spot on the WCC All-Freshman squad.
Johnson became the 13th player in school history to garner WCC second-team accolades and the first since 2011. The forward/midfielder from Kennewick, Wash., was one of the Bulldogs top offensive players in 2013, closing out the season with 12 points on a team-tying high six goals. Four of her six tallies came in West Coast Conference play and three goals were match-winners.
For the second-consecutive season, Gonzaga had a freshman earn honorable mention accolades and All-Freshman team honors. Last year, Lauren Luke grabbed the honor and this year it was Baggerly, a forward from Canby, Ore.
Baggerly led the squad in points with 15. She tied Johnson for most goals this season with six, four also coming in league play, and passed out three assists. Two of her six goals were match-winning tallies, while two others came against then-No. 8 Santa Clara University.
Johnson’s and Baggerly’s six goals this season tie for eighth most in the Zag single-season record book.
The University of Portland grabbed three of the five major awards. Pilot head coach Garret Smith was named Coach of the Year, Amanda Frisbie was tabbed Defender of the Year and Allison Wetherington earned Freshman of the Year accolades.
Santa Clara’s Julie Johnston was named Player of the Year and Erica Owens, of BYU, claimed Goalkeeper of the Year honors.
