Men's Soccer Faces Big Home Weekend Against USF, SMC
SPOKANE, Wash. - It’s arguably the biggest weekend in Gonzaga University men’s soccer history when the University of San Francisco visits Gonzaga Soccer Field Friday followed by Saint Mary’s College on Sunday for a pair of West Coast Conference matches.
Kickoff Friday is 2 p.m. with Sunday’s action starting at noon.
At stake for Gonzaga is a potential at-large berth in the NCAA Championship which begins next Thursday. The Zags (9-5-3, 4-2-3) currently find themselves in third place in the West Coast Conference with 15 points, one ahead of Saint Mary’s College and six behind second-place Santa Clara University. The Bulldogs could tie for second with a pair of wins and a pair of losses by Santa Clara (hosts LMU and San Diego), but the Broncos swept the season series from the Zags.
A Gonzaga win and a Saint Mary’s loss assures the Bulldogs of no worse than third place. LMU has just Friday’s match at SCU remaining, a win giving the Lions the regular-season title and automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. LMU won the first meeting with the Broncos.
Gonzaga University’s nine wins are the most for the Zags since three straight 9-win seasons from 2006-08, and the four wins in West Coast Conference play are the most since a 6-win season in 2008 when the Bulldogs tied for second in the WCC.
The latest RPI rankings published by the NCAA have Gonzaga University at No. 21, the highest ranking among West Coast Conference schools. Santa Clara University is 48th and Loyola Marymount University is 53rd.
