Road WCC Victory At Pacific For Women's Tennis
STOCKTON, Calif. – Melanie Yates clinched the match for the Gonzaga University women’s tennis team Sunday as the Bulldogs won its second West Coast Conference dual of the season 4-3 over University of the Pacific at the Hal Nelson Tennis Courts.
The Zags improve to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in league. GU’s other conference win came against University of San Diego.
Yates’ winner came at the No. 4 singles spot where she won in three sets (1-6, 6-4, 6-4) over Francis Dean. The victory marks the sophomore’s seventh win playing at the No. 4 position and she is 9-3 overall this spring.
The Bulldogs brought home the important doubles point as well.
Top GU pair of Kylie Peek and Samantha Polayes cruised 8-7 over Hana Ritterova and Regina Suarez. The No. 2 team, Yates and Isabell Klingert, sealed the point for the Zags by topping Iveta Masarova and Saenz de Buruaga Ruiz 8-4.
Other Bulldog points came at No. 3 where Polayes downed Ruiz 6-4, 6-1; and at No. 6 where Alexandra Tallas ousted Suarez 6-1, 6-3.
For Polayes, she has won eight of her last 10 singles matches and is 8-4 this spring. Tallas has won three consecutive matches and carries a 5-1 mark at the No. 6 spot.
Gonzaga gets right back to WCC play later this week. The Bulldogs welcome Pepperdine University to the Stevens Center Friday and Loyola Marymount University on Saturday.
