Men's Soccer Hosts Nationally-Ranked Washington Friday
SPOKANE, Wash. - It doesn’t get much bigger than this as Gonzaga University opens the 2014 men’s soccer season at home Friday at 5 p.m. at Luger Field against cross-state rival University of Washington.
The Huskies are ranked No. 4 by Soccer America and No. 6 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) in the preseason polls. The Gonzaga-Washington match will be the second half of a men’s and women’s double-header as the Gonzaga women face the University of Montana at 2:30 p.m.
Gonzaga is looking to turn the tables in its series with the University of Washington. The Bulldogs have cracked the win column just once in 26 previous meetings, taking a 2-1 home victory in 2007. The Bulldogs have one tie in series, a 2-2 home deadlock in 1999. UW leads the series 24-1-1, taking last year’s meeting in Seattle 1-0.
Last season Gonzaga faced a trio of ranked squads and came away victorious against two of them. The Bulldogs opened the season with a 1-0 loss at home against then-No. 21 University of Washington, but bounced back to defeat then-No. 15 UC Santa Barbara on the road and then-No. 21 University of Wisconsin 2-0 on a neutral field at the University of Illinois-Chicago.
