Mickelson Award Winner To Join Gonzaga Men's Golf Team
SPOKANE, Wash. – Angus “Gus” Montgomery of Middlesbrough, England, by way of nearby North Idaho Junior College, will join Gonzaga University’s men’s golf team this fall, head men’s coach Robert Gray announced Wednesday.
Montgomery finished tied for 12th at the 2014 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Golf Championship with a 54-hole score of 301 over the 7,360-yard, par 72 Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa. He finished eight strokes off the lead.
"We’re very excited to have Gus joining our team. His solid ball striking and great touch around the greens will serve him well on the courses we see throughout the season. He’s also a solid student and great young man who fits in well with our team and goals at Gonzaga,” Gray said.
He finished first in three tournaments - the Cardinal Invitational hosted by NIC at 2-over par 146, the Northwest Nazarene University Invitational at 5-under par 211 and the Bigfoot Invitational hosted by the Community Colleges of Spokane with a 4-under par 138. He also finished second three times.
“He had a great season at North Idaho College, including three multiple wins and three second-place finishes,” Gray said. “His success was recognized with the Phil Mickelson Award, given to the most outstanding freshman in NJCAA Division I golf.”
