Zach Hamer Scores In Bulldogs 3-1 Setback To Santa Clara
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University's Erik Hurtado's hat trick propelled the Broncos to a 3-1 West Coast Conference victory over the Gonzaga University men's soccer team Sunday at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
Hurtado found the back of the net twice in the first 15 minutes of the match to give the Broncos the early 2-0 advantage. Ryan Masch found Hurtado in the box and he beat Gonzaga keeper Ryan Caballero to the top right corner at 7:03. It was Hurtado again at the 14:37 mark, dribbling shooting to the upper right corner for the unassisted goal.
Gonzaga pulled within 2-1 by halftime on an unassisted breakaway goal from Zach Hamer. The goal by the sophomore midfielder was his second of the season.
The Bulldogs (4-11-0; 0-8-0) continued to fight and battle for the equalizer, but with two minutes remaining in regulation the Broncos (9-6-0; 6-2-0) were awarded a penalty kick after James Partee was called for the foul. Hurtado scored the penalty at 88:00 to capture his first career hat trick and secure the win and solidify Santa Clara's second-place spot in the standings.
"We are playing very hard. We did a good job of pressuring the game and attacking today, but we just didn't get the final attempt on goal and threaten enough in the box," Gonzaga head coach Einar Thorarinsson said. "While it is frustrating, we are coming out and playing hard in games and practice."
The Bulldogs return home this weekend to host the University of San Diego Friday and Loyola Marymount University Sunday. Since the regular-season home finale will be a mid-week game this year, Gonzaga's seniors will be honored in pre-game ceremonies Sunday.
