Johnsen Wins Match Play; Advances At Oregon Championship

TUALATIN, Ore. - Gonzaga University men's golfer Travis Johnsen won his opening round of match play Wednesday at the 103^rd Oregon Amateur Championship at Tualatin Country Club.

Johnsen, seeded 15^th following the 36 holes of stroke play Monday and Tuesday, defeated Justin Wiles of Klamath Falls, Ore., 2 and 1.

Johnsen had earned a spot in match play after tying for 15^th after stroke play with a 36-hole total of 70-78-148.

The Bulldog senior-to-be will face 18^th seed Steven DaSilva of Beaverton, Ore., Thursday. DaSilva defeated 47^th seed Matt Newcombe of Ridgefield, Wash., 5 and 3.

Note: Gonzaga men's golfer Peter Gullickson finished tied for 29^th at the 86^th Washington State Men's Amateur Championship. Gullickson finished the championship - held at Eagles Pride Golf Course in Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. - with a 299 (77-74-76-72). The championship was held June 12-15.
