SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University's men's and women's tennis teams were honored once again by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for their outstanding work in the classroom as teams and individuals.

Both Bulldog teams were honored with a 2012 ITA All-Academic Team Award and 14 individuals received awards. The Bulldog women, coached by D.J. Gurule, compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.57 during the spring and the men's team, led by Peter MacDonald, possessed a 3.56 cumulative GPA.

"This is not only a huge compliment to the student-athletes, but a lot of credit needs to be given to the academic support team we have at Gonzaga," MacDonald said. "This is just proof of the emphasis we put on being a student."

Each Bulldog team had seven members named ITA Scholar Athletes.

The Bulldog women were represented by graduated seniors Sophie Lantta (3.47 GPA, history) and Madeline Parker (3.21, marketing), seniors-to-be Taurie Bjerken (3.28, finance and marketing) and Britta Stime (3.76, international relations), and sophomores-to-be Alexandra Tallas (3.63, sociology), Kylie Peek (3.82, public relations) and Sandy Dennett (3.70, undeclared).  Men's honorees were graduated senior Zhia Hwa Chong (3.83, computer science),   seniors-to-be Levin Guillermo (3.96, civil engineering) and Olivier Jamin (3.83, political science), juniors-to-be Pablo Mosquera Pérez (3.48, journalism) and Muzeen Ismath (3.61, biology) and sophomores-to-be Vladimir Mijatovic (3.86, undeclared) and Alvaro Nazal (3.92, business administration).

"I am very proud of what our team accomplished in the classroom last year. This award is a testament to the hard work and the commitment to excellence that our team and Mike Roden, and his staff, have accomplished throughout the year. For our team to have seven players awarded as ITA All-Academic individuals list is quite an accomplishment. I couldn't be more proud." Gurule said.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.20 or above on a 4.00 scale. All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA/CA JUCO eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year, which includes fall 2010 and spring 2011.

For a student-athlete to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, he or she must be a varsity letter winner, have a GPA of at least 3.50 on a 4.00 scale for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters, including freshman through senior year.

Only two WCC women's teams were awarded (Gonzaga and Santa Clara University) and only Gonzaga was honored on the men's list.
