Three Zags Extend Singles Streaks In WCC Loss To Lions

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University women's tennis players Britta Stime, Kristina Zauere and Kylie Peek extended their singles win streaks but the Bulldogs dropped a close 4-3 decision to Loyola Marymount University in a West Coast Conference match at the Spokane Racquet Club Friday evening.

The Lions (9-7, 1-4 WCC) got the match started with April Bisharat and Claudia Razzeto beating Prue Teitzel and Madeline Parker 8-1 at No. 3 doubles. Zauere and Katie Edwards picked up an 8-7 (5) victory over Ashley Anderson and Tory Parravi at No.1 singles to force the doubles point to be decide at No. 2 doubles. In another close matchup, Elisaveta Pironkova and Reka Rohonyi edged Peek and Sophie Lantta 8-6 to win the doubles point for the Lions.

After Bisharat beat Teitzel 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles for the second point, Zauere won the Bulldogs first point with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Razzeto at No. 3 singles to extend her win streak to three straight. Peek also extended her win streak to three matches after picking up a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 victory at No. 4 singles to help the Bulldogs tie the match 2-2. Although Edwards won the first set 6-4, her opponent Parravi rebounded and won the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 to give the Lions the lead. Lantta also won the first set in her No. 5 singles match, but Mija Jin bounced back to beat the senior 6-2, 6-2 to lock up the match winning point for the Lions.

Stime closed out the day beating Reka Rohonyi 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 at No. 6 singles to extend her win streak to four matches.

"It was a very close match that could have gone either way," Bulldogs head coach D.J. Gurule said. "We really have to give LMU credit, they played very well in some pressure situations. We will definitely learn from this tough loss. I was very happy with the effort and fight that we put up today."

The Bulldogs busy weekend continues as they welcome 35th-ranked Pepperdine University to the SRC Saturday at 11 a.m.
