SPOKANE, Wash. -  Four in-season tournaments, matches against  three 2011 NCAA Tournament participants, three matches against first-time opponents and non-conference opponents from eight different conferences dot the 2012 Gonzaga University women's volleyball schedule, as announced by Bulldog head coach Dave Gantt Tuesday.

The Bulldogs begin the new season at the Northwest Challenge, Aug. 24-25. Hosted by the University of Washington this season, the Northwest Challenge is in its fifth-season and also includes Boise State University and Portland State University. The host Huskies are the first of three teams on the Zags docket that made a splash in last year's NCAA Tournament.

"The Northwest Challenge moves to the first weekend this year, and will provide a good measurement of our team immediately," explained Gantt. "That measure needs to indicate a high level of play as we move into the second weekend."

The second weekend of play for the Zags will take place at the Martin Centre as they host the Gonzaga Invitational Volleyball Tournament, Aug. 31-Sept. 1. Gonzaga's opening match of the tournament will be against South Dakota State University. The tournament also features UC Riverside and Eastern Washington University.

"The Gonzaga Invitational will provide our only home matches of the preseason and we want to establish a challenging home court environment right away," stated Gantt.

Gonzaga hits the road for its final two in-season tournaments, participating in the UNLV Classic Sept. 7-8 and the Arizona State University Sheraton Invitational, Sept. 14-15.

The UNLV Classic, held at the Cox Pavilion, feature first-time opponents in Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M. Gonzaga will also match-up with host UNLV for the first time since the 2003 campaign.

The Bulldogs will then play four matches at the ASU Sheraton Invitational; opening the weekend up with Florida Atlantic and first-time opponent Villanova University. Gonzaga also faces UC Riverside and host Arizona State.

After its challenging non-conference slate, which all-together totals 13 matches, Gonzaga jumps right into West Coast Conference play, which Gantt believes his team will be ready for.

"As a result of increased non-conference matches and an increased roster size, we should be well prepared to go on the road in late September for our first three West Coast Conference matches," said Gantt. "As we grow our program, we need to create the right blend of competitive experiences to prepare ourselves for the increased challenge of West Coast Conference play."

West Coast Conference action does start out on the road for the Zags as they play five of their first seven matches away from the Martin Centre, including the first three.

Gonzaga's first home league weekend is set for Thursday, Oct. 4 and Saturday, Oct. 6 as it hosts the University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University, respectively.

WCC foes Pepperdine University and the University of San Diego are coming off successful 2011 campaigns. The Waves made it to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament a season ago and won the 2012 Sand National Championship, while the Toreros made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

"After the success of the Pepperdine program in 2011-12; with an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, coupled with the inaugural 2012 Sand National Championship, every program in the WCC will be working to raise their respective level of play to compete successfully," explained Gantt of the always competitive WCC. "Success in conference play will necessitate bringing our "A Game" for every match."

Gonzaga plays at San Diego Oct. 11 and hosts the Toreros on Nov. 10. The Bulldogs play host to Pepperdine Oct. 20 and close out the regular season in Malibu, Calif., against the Waves Nov. 17.

Season tickets for women's volleyball are currently on sale for $25, along with Family Passes, which includes two adults and up to four children, for $50. Season tickets and Family Passes can be purchased online at www.gozags.com/tickets or by calling the Gonzaga Athletic Ticket Office at (509) 313-6000.
