Lobos Score Early To Sweep Series From No. 22 Bulldogs
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Andy Hunter had two hits including a double and a RBI, but the 22nd-ranked Gonzaga University baseball team fell to the University of New Mexico 4-1 Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Bulldogs (10-3) are swept in a three-game non-conference series for the first this season.
Eric Lane also produced two of the Bulldogs eight hits while Alex Stanford turned a base hit into a triple to lead the effort. Freshman Derek Callahan (0-1), who made his collegiate debut, surrendered the four runs but struck out two, walked two and allowed five hits in 4 2/3 innings pitched. Sean-Luke Brija scattered two hits in 1 1/3 shutout innings of work while Derek Peterson and Zach Abbruzza each struck out a batter in an inning of work.
Lobo (5-9) starting pitcher Rudy Jaramillo (2-1) allowed the one run on seven hits but struck out seven in seven innings pitched. Josh Walker got the save after throwing two shutout frames.
Callahan retired the first two batters he faced in the first inning but after he walked the third batter, he moved the runner to second base on a wild pitch and a triple to right field brought in the Lobos first run of the game. After the Lobos scored the second run on a RBI bunt single, Callahan got the next batter to fly out to end the inning.
The Bulldogs had an opportunity to get on the board in the fourth inning when Lane and Travis Forbes hit back-to-back leadoff singles. Lane moved to third base on Steven Halcomb's fly out to right field, but Royce Bolinger grounded into a double play to end the inning.
One inning later, Stanford hit a one-out triple to center field and Hunter followed with a pinch-hit RBI single through the left side to cut the Lobos lead to one. Maxx Garrett would single to left field but was forced out on Lane's fielder choice to the shortstop.
In the Lobos half of the fifth inning, Callahan allowed a leadoff single but he got the next two batters to fly out. The Lobos would use a RBI triple and a RBI single to take a 4-1 lead.
The Bulldogs looked to get back into the game in the eighth inning when Lane hit a one-out single and Clayton Eslick followed with a pinch-hit single, but Halcomb grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Before they return to Spokane, the Bulldogs will travel from Albuquerque to Fayetteville, Ark., to play a two-game midweek series with fourth-ranked University of Arkansas. The series starts Tuesday at 4:05 p.m. PDT.
