MORAGA, Calif. - Marco Gonzales had three hits and struck out seven batters in 7 2/3 innings of work to help the Gonzaga University baseball team snapped its four-game losing skid with a 4-3 West Coast Conference win over Saint Mary's College Saturday.

Gonzales, who was given both hitting and pitching assignments for the fourth time this season, allowed three runs on six hits and six walks during his outing on the mound.

David Bigelow held the Gaels (22-22, 6-11 WCC) in check the rest of the way for his third save of the season.

In addition to Gonzales' three hits, Royce Bolinger and Alex Stanford both added two hits, while Brock Slavin and Andy Hunter recorded one to complete the Bulldogs (28-17, 8-9 WCC) nine-hit afternoon.

Before Gonzales took the mound, he went to work on Gael starter Kyle Barraclough (2-7) with a leadoff single through the left side. After Steven Halcomb moved the pitcher to second base with a sacrifice bunt, Clayton Eslick was awarded first base after being hit by the pitch and Bolinger loaded the bases with a base hit to left field. The Bulldogs got two runs across when Stanford hit a RBI single to left field and Slavin forced in a run with a walk.

Gonzales retired the first two batters he faced in the game, but the Gaels scored in a run using two singles and a walk. The left-hander ran into trouble in the fifth inning when he surrendered two walks and a single to load the bases with one out. After a fly out to left field, the Gaels tied the game 2-2 when a walk forced in a run. Gonzales got out of the jam with a groundout to the third baseman Mitchell Gunsolus.

The game did not stay tied for long. With two out in the sixth, Gonzales singled to left field and Barraclough walked Halcomb and hit Eslick again to load the bases for Bolinger, who walked in a run to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead.

One inning later, Slavin led off with a single and advanced to second on an error by the shortstop. Hunter followed with a RBI single to right field to give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead.

The insurance run proved to be helpful as the Gaels used a leadoff double and a two-out RBI single to cut Gonzaga's lead to 4-3.

Bigelow opened the home half of the ninth hitting the leadoff batter, but a bunt pop out to the first baseman Hunter and a double play ball started by the second baseman Stanford secured the win for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs and Gaels wrap up the WCC series Sunday at noon.
