Gonzales In Top Five For John Olerud Two-Way Player Of Year
LUBBOCK, Texas - Gonzaga University sophomore pitcher/first baseman Marco Gonzales is one of five players named to the College Baseball Hall of Fame's John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award list.
Joining Gonzales are Brian Johnson, University of Florida; Michael Lorenzen, Cal State Fullerton; Kevin McKague, Army, and Stephen Piscotty, Stanford University.
The left-hander from Fort Collins, Colo. posted an 8-2 record and a 1.55 ERA in 12 starts in as many appearances this season in helping the Bulldogs to a 34-22 record. His ERA current ranks seventh in the country. He fanned 92 batters in 92 2/3 innings while walking just 23, and allowed just 12 extra-base hits including three home runs. Opponents had a .201 batting average against him.
At the plate he hit .325 with 29 RBI, 10 doubles and a pair of home runs. He had a fielding percentage of .971 with eight errors in 279 chances.
The list will be narrowed to three finalists in Omaha and the winner of the John Olerud Award will be named on June 30 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of College Baseball's Night of Champions. The event also features the announcement of winners of the National Pitcher of the Year and Brooks Wallace Award. The Johnny Bench Award, the NCBWA Stopper Award and Dick Howser Trophy will also be presented, as well as the 2012 National College Baseball Hall of Fame inductions.
