Gonzales Goes Hitless; USA Baseball Blanks Chinese Taipei 2-0
HAARLEM, The Netherlands - The hitting woes continued for Gonzaga University junior-to-be Marco Gonzales Wednesday as he went 0-for-3 as the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team stopped Chinese Taipei 2-0 to run its Honkbal Week record to 3-1.
Honkbal is Dutch for baseball.
Gonzales, who got a pinch-hit single Tuesday to snap a 0-for-16 streak in non-exhibition game play, was back in the lineup Wednesday batting sixth. Gonzales struck out swinging in the second inning, popped to third in the fifth and grounded back to the pitcher in the seventh.
Kyle Farmer drove in the go-ahead run to give the CNT the lead in the eighth inning. Austin Cousino walked to open the eight, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on Farmer's double to left field. Farmer scored on Johnny Field's two-out double to right.
The Collegiate National Team, 3-1 in pool play, will conclude pool play Thursday against the host team The Netherlands. Medal round play begins Friday with semifinal action.
