Gonzales Slated To Get USA Baseball Medal Round Start Saturday
HAARLEM, The Netherlands - Marco Gonzales, a Gonzaga University junior-to-be, went 0-for-1 in a pinch-hit role Thursday as the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team blanked the host team The Netherlands 1-0 to conclude pool play in Honkbal Week.
Honkbal is Dutch for baseball.
The CNT finished 4-1 overall in pool play in the five-team tournament and will be the No. 2 seed in medal play beginning Saturday. The CNT could finish tied for first if 4-0 Puerto Rico falls to Chinese Taipei (0-4) Saturday, but PR would get the No. 1 seed by virtue of its 3-2 win over the CNT. The CNT will face either The Netherlands or Cuba, who go into Friday's match-up 2-2 with the winner taking third to face the CNT and the loser fourth to face Puerto Rico in the medal round.
Japan, the fifth team in the tourney, finished 1-4.
Gonzales struck out in his lone plate appearance in the seventh inning Thursday after being ahead in the count 3-0. The CNT scored the game's lone run in the top of the fifth when The Netherlands starting pitcher Orlando Yntema hit back-to-back hitters, issued a walk to load the bases and then hit another batter - all with one out - to score the game's only run. A pair of fly balls ended the inning.
Gonzales, who pitched seven innings and struck out 10 last Saturday in the CNT's 4-1 tournament-opening win over Japan, is scheduled to get the start on the mound Saturday.
