SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Tyler Olson went the distance for the second time this season and his batterymate Maxx Garrett hit a clutch two-run single in the fourth inning to lift the Gonzaga University baseball team to a 6-2 win over 19th-ranked University of San Diego in the West Coast Conference series opener Thursday afternoon.

Olson improved his record to 4-0 after allowing one earned run on seven hits and two walks. He also struck out four batters in his outing.

Royce Bolinger extended his team-leading hitting streak to 14 games after the senior blasted his only hit on the day to left field. Clayton Eslick also extended his hitting streak to 12 games after going 2-for-3 at the plate. He has also reached base safely in the last 26 games. The Bulldogs (20-7, 3-1 WCC) also got a pair of hits from Alex Stanford and Andy Hunter while Billy Moon and Payden Cawley Lamb added one.

Torero starting pitcher Calvin Drummond (6-2) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits and two walks.

After the Toreros (23-8, 5-2 WCC) retired the Bulldogs in order in the first inning, they quickly went to work on Olson. With two outs and a runner on first, the Toreros used back-to-back two-out singles to drive in the first run of the game. Olson would load the bases by hitting the next batter he faced, but the senior avoided serious damage with by striking out the following batter to end the inning.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the third inning. Moon led off with a double to right field and advanced to third when Garrett successfully laid down a sacrifice bunt. After Eric Lane was hit by the pitch, Cawley Lamb hit a grounder to second base but reached safely to avoid an inning-ending double play and allow Moon to score the tying run.

One inning later, Eslick and Stanford led off with back-to-back singles and Hunter moved both of them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. After Moon was intentionally walked with two outs, Garrett hit a two-run single to centerfield to give the Bulldogs a 3-1 lead.

Bolinger would add breathing room with his leadoff homer in the fifth. Although the Toreros scored their second run in the eighth inning, the Bulldogs added more to their lead in the ninth. With two outs, Bonczyk singled to shortstop and Bolinger followed reaching on an error by the second baseman. Eslick drew a walk to load the bases and Stanford hit a two-run single up the middle to give the Bulldogs a 6-2 lead.

The Bulldogs and Toreros will meet again for the middle game of the conference series Friday at 3 p.m.
