SEATTLE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University baseball team got back on the winning path Monday as the Bulldogs erased an early two-run deficit and beat in-state rival University of Washington 6-4.

Alex Stanford and Clayton Eslick both produced three of the Bulldogs (21-9) 12 hits. Eric Lane and Payden Cawley Lamb added two hits while Royce Bolinger and Brock Slavin recorded one.

Bulldog starting pitcher Kenny Smith (2-0) got the nod for the first time in his collegiate career. The sophomore allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks in 5 1/3 innings en route to earning his second win in back-to-back appearances. Derek Peterson went the rest of the way allowing one run on a pair of hits to earn his second save.

The Bulldogs handed Husky starter Steven Swift his first loss of the season after scoring four runs on eight hits off him.

The Huskies (17-12) led off their half of the second with a base hit, but a fielding error put the runner in second base. The Huskies used a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third base and after a walk, Bolinger made a diving effort to catch a fly ball in right center field but the ball bounced by him and the Huskies got on board using a two-run triple. The Bulldogs got out of the inning on a ground out.

The Bulldogs answered back in the third inning. With one out, Cawley Lamb singled up the middle and Bolinger sent a pitch to the left center field wall for a RBI double. Eslick followed with a base hit to right field but the right fielder bobbled the ball and Bolinger took advantage of the error to score the game-tying run. After Eslick advanced to third on Stanford's double to left field, Halcomb hit a fly ball to right field deep enough to bring Eslick home to give Gonzaga a 3-2 lead.

With one out in the fourth inning, Lane reached on a base hit up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch. The Zags took a 4-2 lead when Cawley Lamb hit a RBI double to center field.

The Huskies cut the Bulldogs lead to one run when in the fifth inning. Smith walked the leadoff hitter and a base hit put two runners on base. The Huskies used a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position and while an error occurred by the Bulldogs, the Huskies scored their third run of the game.

The Huskies knocked on the door again in the next inning. Smith allowed a leadoff double and a groundout to the second baseman Stanford moved the runner to third. Peterson would come into the game looking to end the threat and the redshirt freshman was successful as he got the next two batters to pop out and ground out to Stanford.

The Bulldogs were able to cash in some more insurance runs in the seventh inning. Bolinger won a free pass to first base with one out and Eslick followed with a base hit through the right side. Stanford would single to right field but another fielding error allowed Bolinger to score the fifth run and move Eslick to third. The Bulldogs would take a 6-3 lead when Andy Hunter hit a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Bulldogs and Huskies will conclude this short two-game series Tuesday at 1 p.m.
