Bulldogs Baseball Tops Washington State 7-2 In Pullman
PULLMAN, Wash. – Marco Gonzales and Caleb Wood each had 2 RBI for Gonzaga University baseball as the Bulldogs topped Washington State University 7-2 at Bailey-Brayton Field Tuesday night. The Zags are 2-0 against the Cougars with both victories coming in Pullman. Gonzaga and WSU wrap up its three-game series Apr. 16 in Spokane.
The win moves GU to 17-10-1 overall. Washington State falls top 16-11.
The Zags got a strong start from Derek Callahan (2-1) who went five innings allowing four hits and no runs. Callahan struck out three and lowered his ERA to 2.56.
The Bulldogs were on the board first by getting three runs in the fourth inning. Mitchell Gunsolus and Wood both reached base safely to start the inning which prompted the Cougars to pull starter Sam Triece for J.D. Leckenby.
Gonzales would single in the first GU run followed by a run scoring on an error by the WSU first baseman. Payden Cawley Lamb would bring another run in with a base knock to the left side to give the Zags a 3-0 lead.
Alex Bonczyk would score in the fourth for Gonzaga on a Leckenby wild pitch moving the GU advantage to 4-0.
The Bulldogs would build its lead to 6-0 with two additional runs in the top of the seventh. Wood singled in Bonczyk and would score on Gonzales base hit down the right field line.
The Cougars scored its only two runs in their half of the seventh. Nick Tanielu and Adam Nelubowich each with an RBI double to get WSU on the board.
Gonzaga would hold the lead for the win and even added another run in the eighth on a Wood single.
The Zags outhit the Cougars 11-10. Wood finished 2-for-4 and Gonzales reached base five times by going 3-for-3 with two walks.
The Bulldogs will now prepare for a three-game series against the University Portland starting Friday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Portland, Ore.
