Zags Outlast Saint Mary's With A 8-7 Win In Extras
SPOKANE, Wash. – Gonzaga University won its sixth consecutive game 8-7 in an 11 inning rainy thriller over Saint Mary’s College Friday night at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field. After the Gaels walked the bases loaded, Steven Halcomb singled to the third baseman to bring home the walk-off victory.
Gonzaga is now 3-0 extra innings and 21-10-1 overall. GU’s WCC record also bumps to 9-4. The Gaels fall to 11-23 and 2-5 WCC.
The Bulldogs got a solid start from Marco Gonzales who went seven innings allowing six hits, four runs, one earned and striking out nine Gaels. Gonzales would however get a no-decision as Saint Mary’s rallied in the ninth.
Leading 7-4 and needing three outs to win, Saint Mary’s loaded the bases with Kenny Smith on the mound. A wild pitch brought home the first SMC run of the inning forcing the Zags to bring in Arturo Reyes (4-1) from the bullpen.
Gael Shawn O’Brien singled in the tying runs before getting thrown out at second base but the damage was done. Tied 7-7, the WCC rivals were going to extras.
However, Saint Mary’s reliever Gary Cornish put the Gaels in a hole they would not recover from. Cornish walked the bases loaded with one, which brought Halcomb to the dish for the game winner.
Reyes picked up the victory for GU. He went 2.2 innings allowing just a hit and punching out four.
Before extra innings, the Bulldogs built its lead by scoring in five consecutive innings. Offensively the team was paced by Cory LeBrun who finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, Mitchell Gunsolus who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Halcomb who homered in the fifth inning.
The Zags did have three costly errors in the game that all came from Halcomb, but he more than made up for it at the plate.
The Bulldogs and Gaels return to the park tomorrow for game two with a 6:00 p.m. start time.
